The big name in this pool is obviously SLC, the Dragons contrary to popular belief are a very good 7 on 7 squad and a threat to win any tournament entered including the state tournament. It all starts with QB Riley Dodge who pilots the ship but Dodge has a ton of weapons at his disposal including RB Tre Newton and WR's Blake Cantu, Chris Brainard and Ethan Cunningham. It will be very difficult for anyone in this pool to take the Dragons out. One team that does match SLC's talent is Mesquite, the Skeeters who are making their SQT debut feature their own big time QB in Kelly Page. MHS is very athletic across the board and of Page's top receiver is Adrian Richards. Richards is nearly 6'4 and can out jump most DB's. The Skeeters feature a couple of solid defensive backs also in Terrance Baker and Jeremy Hernandez. Arlington High doesn't have the raw talent they have had the past couple of seasons, but they do have a solid QB in Brandon Kelsey. Boswell who made the state tournament last year and nearly knocked off Southlake Carroll on the second day during bracket play is back at full strength for 7 on 7 after being eliminated from the baseball playoffs. The Pioneers will depend on QB Daniel Harrist to lead a very young squad. Look for this pool to come down to Southlake Carroll and Mesquite, if the Skeeters come ready to play I think they'll give the Dragons all they want but in the end I expect SLC to prevail.
Little Matt's Pick: Southlake Carroll
Lamar got off to a rough start in pool play last week at Colleyville Heritage as they were bounced by Plano 33-19. The Vikes were able to respond and win their next two pool games. LHS has plenty of offensive talent with QB Ben Sherrard and WR Lazarus Anderson, but there are some questions on defense as the Vikings don't appear to be as strong in the secondary. Keller had a good showing last week at Colleyville going 2-1 in pool play, however the Indians had a chance to make more noise but a blowout loss in the third game prevented them from advancing to the semi-finals. KHS has the tools to win this pool but they'll need to be more consistent. Richland was rained out last week in Granbury and as a young team they needed that experience. It could be a long day for the Rebels in a solid pool, LB Victor Jones has great speed and could contribute on offense. Arlington Martin like Richland was rained out last week at Granbury, the Warriors are a run based offense and their top player is RB Jeremi Mathis. MHS will feature some solid athletes but I think a lack of continuity in the passing game will doom them to one pool win at best. This will come down to Lamar and Keller, if Keller has another game in them like their win over Arl. Bowie last week they could win the pool. However if they play like they did against Plano West last week they'll have big problems with a seasoned Lamar squad.
Little Matt's Pick: Arlington Lamar
This is a pool that features lots of question marks, Lake Dallas makes their 2007 SQT debut seeking their first ever trip to the state tournament. The Falcons did graduate a good senior class but they still have plenty of talent led by QB Zach Waggoner and WR Alvin Blackmon. Frisco Centennial like Lake Dallas makes their SQT debut as well, the Titans don't have a much of a history of 7 on 7 success. However CHS does have a solid combo of junior QB Ryan Mossakowski and WR Aaron Kirkpatrick. For the second season in a row Lincoln is entered in the Bowie SQT and last year the Tigers impressed. LHS is very dangerous in 7 on 7 due to their speed and athletes they feature across the board. No one can afford to take the Tigers lightly this year, LHS is led by RB Byron Bailey. Birdville is headlined by QB Tommy Dorman, but he wasn't able to put the Hawks on his back and lead them to any wins last week. In fact BHS failed to win a single game and by the end of the day they looked tired and disinterested. The pool isn't as daunting this week as it was last week, but a lack of speed on both sides of the ball will be the Hawks undoing. I look for Lake Dallas to win a very evenly matched pool as this could come down to a tie-breaker.
Little Matt's Pick: Lake Dallas
Fort Worth Eastern Hills
Fort Worth Wyatt
This a pool that screams lopsided. Arlington Bowie will be looking to qualify in what their coaches are saying is their final SQT of the summer. The Vols looked excellent at times in last week's Colleyville Heritage SQT advancing to the semi-finals before falling in a thriller to Plano 47-46. The Vols defense will need to play a little better if they want to get into the state tournament comfortably. Colleyville Heritage for the second time in three years won their own SQT last week, QB Tyler Little was impressive as was junior DB Eddie Foster. I don't expect a full Panthers squad to show up this week and if they do, the rotation will be very liberal. Eastern Hills has had to wait a week to make their SQT debut, the Highlanders by the end of June may be a dangerous 7 on 7 team and the postponing of the Granbury SQT could be a blessing in disguise. I expect EHHS to go through some growing pains but be tough later in the month. Wyatt played in a non-SQT two weeks ago in Waxahachie and struggled, the competition this week will be even tougher. I expect the Chaps to struggle to even win a single game. With Colleyville already qualifying and not being able to advance Bowie wins this pool in a runaway.
Little Matt's Pick: Arlington Bowie
Southlake Carroll vs. Arlington Lamar
No love lost between these two in 7 on 7 play although they haven't met up much, but when they do play fireworks usually ensue. I expect a war, as Lamar will be up for the Dragons without question. In the end I think the Vikes don't have the physical quick DB's they had last year and that plays right into the Dragons hand. I'll go with Southlake although I do think Lamar will qualify and maybe it'll be next week at the Southlake SQT.
Lake Dallas vs. Arlington Bowie
This will be a one sided affair, the Vols will coast into the state tournament against the Falcons. Lake Dallas has some young talent but they don't have the sheer number of athletes the Vols have and with homefield advantage Bowie is an easy pick.
Southlake Carroll vs. Arlington Bowie
It's never a bad pick to go against the Dragons, look for Bowie to put up a fight but I find it tough to pick against Southlake especially early in SQT play.
