Grapevine SQT Picks and Preview

There are many, many imposters out there in the vast world of Texas Internet High School Coverage. However there is one place and one place only you'll get this kind of coverage for 7 on 7 and you are right here! The best part about the coverage it's FREE!!!

Pool A

Grapevine

Arlington Lamar* (already qualified can not advance out of pool play)

Mesquite Horn

Dallas Jesuit

Grapevine brings back a load of offensive talent and they are a strong bet to qualify for state in their only SQT. QB Matt Harbin has several big receivers to throw the ball to in Ethan Davis, Logan Mullins and Kale Gellis. Lamar qualified earlier in the week at Bowie and with star receiver Sean Harrison back in the fold the Vikings looked great. They may not have a full deck this weekend but the goal has been accomplished and Lamar is heading to state. Mesquite Horn is making their SQT debut and the Jaguars have a strong chance at knocking off host GHS, keep an eye on RB Bruce Hatton and WR Kelan Cheadle. Jesuit usually plays solid in SQT's but they seem to run out of steam as the day wears on and being in a tough pool will make things tough on the Rangers. Although I think Horn can play with Grapevine I've got to go with the Mustangs.

Little Matt's Pick: Grapevine

Pool B

Dallas Hillcrest

Stephenville* (already qualified can not advance out of pool play)

Richardson Pearce

Fort Worth Eastern Hills

Hillcrest leads this pool off, the Panthers were winless in a very difficult pool last week at Southlake Carroll. QB Willie Taylor and co. should fare better this week but anything more than maybe one win will be a surprise. Stephenville may not bring a full squad this week, as they've already proven they are an elite squad. Plus I think they'll decide to bring their big guns out one more time next week at Brownwood, so look for a lot of young players to see time this week. Pearce much like Horn in Pool A hasn't been a player on the SQT scene but it's nice to see some new schools playing! PHS is led by a pair of speedy WR's in John Gush and Dishon Hughes. Eastern Hills nearly won their pool Wednesday at Bowie's SQT, the Highlanders have some great athletes and speed but a lack of depth caught up Wednesday. 6'3 WR Dwaine Guyton is an underrated performer and is someone to keep an eye on! I think the pool will come down to Eastern Hills and Pearce and I'll be a homer and take the Fort Worth ISD school.

Little Matt's Pick: FW Eastern Hills

Pool C

Aledo

Southlake Carroll* (already qualified can not advance out of pool play)

Keller Central

Denton

Another newcomer to the SQT scene is Aledo, the Bearcats are a power during the regular season but how will they fare in 7 on 7? ATH Cole Loftin who plays QB during the season may be better utilized at WR in 7 on 7. Southlake Carroll qualified last week at their own SQT, the Dragons like Stephenville may let some young guys get some reps in this week. Keller Central played a few weeks back at Colleyville and posted a 1-2 record in pool play, WR Jarrod Darden will be a tough match up for anyone with his 6'5 frame. Denton High hasn't exactly been a contender as of late in 7 on 7 or in the fall, and I don't expect the Broncos to do much this week either. Overall I am going to go out on a limb and take Aledo to make the semi-finals.

Little Matt's Pick: Aledo

Pool D

Plano* (already qualified can not advance out of pool play)

Richland

Haltom

Denton Guyer

Plano wasn't at full strength and it showed last week at Southlake as the Wildcats were 1-2 and ended up getting drilled by Plano West in their final game. I expect a full PSHS squad this week including Rex Burkhead and I also expect Plano to come out with a little fire to get back on the right track. Richland posted a 1-2 record on Wednesday, I expect the Rebels to play better this week although their record may not indicate it. Haltom who qualified for the State Tournament last year will be very young, and the Buffaloes lost most of their offensive talent. The status of RB Lance Dunbar is also up in the air. Denton Guyer has fared better this summer in 7 on 7 but the Wildcats still have a ways to go. I think this pool will come down to the two Birdville ISD schools and I'll take Haltom and their better overall talent.

Little Matt's Pick: Haltom

Semi-Finals

Grapevine vs. FW Eastern Hills

I think the Highlanders run to the state tournament comes to a screeching halt against 7 on 7 power Grapevine.

Little Matt's Pick: Grapevine

Aledo vs. Haltom

A battle of black and orange in the semi-finals and despite Haltom going to a run oriented offense I think the Buffaloes will advance.

Little Matt's Pick: Haltom

Finals

Grapevine vs. Haltom

Little Matt's Pick: Grapevine
