Pool A

Stephenville* (can not advance past pool play)

Abilene Cooper

Gatesville

Richland Springs

Stephenville leads this pool off, the Jackets in 3 SQTs have posted an 11-0 record. That unbeaten record may get tested this week as according to the Yellow Jackets coaches they may not bring a full squad out to Brownwood. Abilene Cooper had a strong tournament last week at Abilene going 2-1 losing only to Wichita Falls. CHS seems to have recovered from the loss of RB J.J. Jones during league play two weeks ago. A very young Gatesville squad took some lumps last week at the Arlington Bowie Small School SQT, the Hornets may fare a little better this week but they aren't a threat to knock off the heavy favorite Cooper. Richland Springs is a intriguing newcomer to the SQT scene QB Tyler Ethridge has put up astounding numbers in his career leading the Coyotes to two state titles in three years in six man football. I think the Coyotes should not be taken lightly but I don't see them having enough depth to compete in all three pool games. Cooper with their athletes and depth is an easy pick in this pool.

Little Matt's Pick: Abilene Cooper

Pool B

Abilene* (can not advance past pool play)

Granbury

Lampasas

Brady

Abilene as predicted blew through their own SQT last week posting a 5-0 record and only getting a serious challenge from Class 2A Coleman in pool play. Granbury posted a 1-2 record last week at Wylie but the Pirates were in a very tough pool, I expect Granbury to fare better this week and they could be a dark horse to qualify for state. Lampasas after a strong SQT in Burnet on June 2 struggled as the competition was taken up a notch last week at Abilene going 0-3 and not really playing anyone close. WR Jarrod Bowen will need to play big for the Badgers to have a shot at advancing to the semi-finals. Brady if they played in the small school SQTs would be a contender to qualify but BHS has shunned the small school SQTs and they posted a 1-2 mark last week at Abilene. I think Granbury has enough to advance to the semi-finals.

Little Matt's Pick: Granbury

Pool C

Brownwood* (can not advance past pool play)

Buda Hays Consolidated

San Antonio Clark

Eastland

Brownwood finally qualified last week but by the skin of their teeth knocking off a scrappy Wichita Falls squad 33-31 in the Abilene SQT semi-finals. The Lions are now in preparation mode for the State Tournament. Hays Consolidated after struggling at Burnet on June 2, played much better at Alamo Heights last week going 2-1 with their full compliment of players. Hays looks to be an early favorite to win this pool. San Antonio Clark earned their first ever berth to the State Tournament last year at Brownwood, but after losing a strong senior class the Cougars youth showed last week at Alamo Heights going 0-3. Eastland is looking for a tuneup as they may be going all out to try and qualify next week in Tyler at their Small School SQT. EHS is usually solid in 7 on 7 but this week will be a tough chore for the Mavericks to make any noise.

Little Matt's Pick: Buda Hays Consolidated

Pool D

Georgetown* (can not advance past pool play)

Copperas Cove

Cedar Park Vista Ridge

Early

Georgetown qualified last year at Brownwood, but the Eagles won't need to sweat out qualifying this year. Copperas Cove however may need to sweat a little bit, the Bulldawgs are one of three schools in the state to have qualified for every state tournament. However, Cove has played in two tournaments without qualifying so far. Cove looked strong last week at Abilene going 3-0 before falling to Abilene High in the semi-finals. Look for an all out effort from Cove this week. Vista Ridge is still a fairly new school and they have struggled in SQT play and I don't see that changing this week. The always scrappy Early Longhorns round the field out, EHS is led by 6'4 WR Austin Cochran. Cove is an easy pick in this pool.

Little Matt's Pick: Copperas Cove
