Tyler Lee SQT Picks and Preview

There are many, many imposters out there in the vast world of Texas Internet High School Coverage. However there is one place and one place only you'll get this kind of coverage for 7 on 7 and you are right here! The best part about the coverage it's FREE!!!

Pool A

Rockwall* (can not advance past pool play)

Tyler John Tyler

State Qualifier Rockwall is playing one final SQT to tune up for the State Tournament, the Yellow Jackets don't appear to be quite as strong as last year but they really didn't start to peak last year until this SQT. Rockwall's play here could be an indicator of how they play at Texas A&M. John Tyler had a very disappointing performance last week at Paris posting a 1-2 record and failing to advance out of pool play, for the Lions who have been a mainstay at the State Tournament this could be their last shot at qualifying. With that in mind look for an all out effort as JT tries to defend their home turf. This will be Marshall's only SQT of the summer, the Mavericks traditionally haven't been a 7 on 7 power in the past. However MHS has some strong offensive talent led by junior QB Darius Jones Marshall may not quite be the easy out they usually are. Lindale has typically been a solid 7 on 7 squad, last year at the Tyler Lee SQT the Eagles advanced all the way to the semi-finals. Lindale's top offensive weapons are 6'6 WR Jacob Holeman and RB Traveon Ray. I'll take JT in this pool, in a surprisingly close game with Marshall.

Little Matt's Pick: Tyler John Tyler

Pool B

South Garland

Beaumont Central

No team in this SQT has more talent than South Garland, the Colonels feature not only QB Nick Florence who has committed to Baylor but also WR Courtney Osborne and DB's Steven Osborne and Joseph Ibiloye. SGHS made the semi-finals at the Rockwall SQT and last week finished 2-1 at Wylie, despite missing several key players. I expect the Colonels to be locked and loaded in their final chance at qualifying for state. Despite losing several key players Jacksonville has been very strong in league play this summer, however the level of competition will be revved up this week and despite the speed JHS has I don't think they'll have enough to advance out of a strong pool. Whitehouse has traditionally been a solid 7 on 7 squad and they posted a 2-1 record last week at Paris SQT, DB Stephen Hicks is one of the best in not only East Texas but the entire state. Beaumont Central is a relative unknown when it comes to 7 on 7, but the Jaguars will feature some great athletes. Keep an eye on RB Derrick Hall and WR Victor Spikes. Overall I think South Garland's combination of great athletes and good QB makes the difference in this pool.

Little Matt's Pick: South Garland

Pool C

Sulphur Springs

Elysian Fields

Longview Pine Tree

Sulphur Springs had a strong showing last week at Paris by winning their pool. SSHS is led by QB Brittan Diamond and WR DaQualin Evans. The Wildcats have had a strong summer and will be a threat in this SQT despite the blowout loss to Killeen High in the Paris SQT semi-finals. Forney played much better last week but still went 0-3, the Jackrabbits lost 3 close games to some very good teams. I expect FHS to continue their strong play this week. Elysian Fields has a headliner in QB Tim Curry, Curry won't be able to lead the Yellow Jackets out of pool play this week but look for EFHS to use this SQT as a tune-up for next week's small school SQT. Pine Tree much like Forney was a semi-finalist at the Paris SQT, the Pirates have proven themselves to be a worthy 7 on 7 squad this summer and I think they will be surprise entry into the semi-finals of this SQT.

Little Matt's Pick: Longview Pine Tree

Pool D

Arlington Lamar* (can not advance past pool play)

Tyler Lee

Palestine Westwood

Arlington Lamar makes the trip out East in their final tune up for the State Tournament. The Vikings in years past appeared to be peak early in SQT play and the fade, but this year it looks like Lamar is peaking at the right time. LHS without their full squad still went 2-1 last week at Grapevine and gave tournament champion Grapevine all they wanted. The Vikings will be tough to handle at state with WR's Lazarus Anderson and Sean Harrison. Tyler Lee is in their final shot to qualify, the Red Raiders had a better showing last week at A&M Consolidated after being handled with ease at Rockwall on June 2. Belton after making the semi-finals on June 2 didn't fare as well on June 9 at Lake Travis, the Tigers have some big time offensive weapons in Keith Daniels and Khiry Robinson but they don't have enough to get past Tyler Lee. Palestine Westwood may have been better off if this was being used as a tune-up for the small school SQT in Tyler next week but instead they'll try their hand against the big boys. Not a good idea.
