Pool A

Granbury* (can not advance past pool play)

West Mesquite

Saginaw Boswell

Granbury had a sensational run last week at Brownwood as QB Stephen Darrow and WR Tyler Miller proved to be an unstoppable combo as the Pirates won the title at Brownwood. Granbury will this week play with no pressure as they prepare for the State Tournament. West Mesquite in their only SQT of the summer had an impressive run at Wylie before falling to Mesquite High in the semi-finals, WMHS did post a win over Tyler Lee SQT champion South Garland during pool play. WMHS will feature an athletic squad with tons of speed highlighted by QB Kendall Thomas and rangy DB Markeith Elder. Mansfield had a strong showing in Arlington Bowie's SQT a couple of weeks back going 2-1 in pool play including a win over Colleyville Heritage, the Tigers are led by QB Donovan Roberts and RB/DB Semaj Miller. Boswell hasn't had the 7 on 7 success they had last year as in 2 prior SQTs the Pioneers have posted a 2-4 record and in a tough pool I don't expect them to be a factor. I expect North Mesquite to be the team to beat in this pool and probably in the entire SQT.

Little Matt's Pick: West Mesquite

Pool B

Abilene* (can not advance past pool play)

Fort Worth Eastern Hills

Abilene has been a juggernaut in SQT play posting an 8-0 record in their 2 SQTs including winning their own SQT two weeks ago, the Eagles expect QB Spens Lackey back for the first time since spring practice so look for a big dose of Lackey throwing to WR's Kortney McDow and J.J. James. Eastern Hills has been a pleasant surprise this summer as the Highlanders have played well including a semi-final appearance at Grapevine. EHHS basically came within a dropped interception of beating Richland to earn a spot in the State Tournament. WR Dwaine Guyton is the top player for the Highlanders and is at time impossible to cover one on one. Coppell in their SQT debut at Arlington Bowie had a solid 2-1 showing, DB Devin Smith may also contribute on the offensive side of the ball for the Cowboys. Weatherford who at one time was a big player on the 7 on 7 scene hasn't done much this summer in fact this will be their only SQT. The Kangaroos will be fairly young at the skill spots but still dangerous, DE Kapron Lewis-Moore could see some time at TE on the offensive side of the ball. Overall I think Coppell has the best shot to get out of this pool but don't discount Eastern Hills.

Little Matt's Pick: Coppell

Pool C

Stephenville* (can not advance past pool play)

Arlington Martin

Tyler Lee

Stephenville led by their two Big 12 recruits in QB Kody Spano and DB Cody Davis hasn't lost a 7 on 7 SQT game with their full squad present. Look for SHS to bring the entire crew to Granbury for their final tune up before the State Tournament. Arlington Martin has had a strong SQT showing this year with a semi-final trip at Southlake on June 9 and even with their third string QB at Arlington Bowie the Warriors managed a 2-1 record, RB Jeremi Mathis and DB Jake Sharum are the top two players for MHS but Martin has an athletic group of receivers and DB's who can make plays. Tyler Lee the past two weeks has gotten close to qualifying but the Red Raiders haven't been able to close the deal, a late addition to this SQT Lee will be hard pressed to qualify. Aledo is another late addition to the SQT as it appears the Bearcats will be a mainstay in SQT play in the next couple of years. AHS led by ATH Cole Loftin had a solid showing at Grapevine two weeks ago and they can't be overlooked. Overall this pool could wind up being messier than the fields they'll be playing on Saturday! I could easily see a tiebreaker scenario coming into play and I have a hunch Arlington Martin wins the battle of attrition.

Little Matt's Pick: Arlington Martin

Pool D

Richland* (can not advance past pool play)

Copperas Cove

The Colony

Richland is a surprise guest at the State Tournament, the Rebels may have not only made their summer but possibly their entire season simply by qualifying for the State Tournament. Its now or never for Copperas Cove, the Bulldawgs who are one of only three teams to have qualified for every 7 on 7 State Tournament are down to their final chance this week after being upset in last week's semi-finals at Brownwood by San Antonio Clark. No one questions QB Robert Griffin and his athletic ability but Griffin is still erratic as a passer and with Cove not having the receivers they had last year Cove may not be able to get out of pool play. Wylie is another State Tournament regular who has failed to qualify, the Pirates did advance to the semi-finals at Rockwall on June 2 but they haven't gotten out of pool play since. Wylie seems to have a knack of qualifying late, so don't count AHMO out. The Colony doesn't appear to be much of a threat in 7 on 7 or during the fall, if the Cougars escape with a win it'll be a moral victory. Cove hasn't been impressive at all this summer, so I'll go with Wylie to advance to the semi-finals.

Little Matt's Pick: Wylie
