TPI Centex 4A Top 10: No. 10 Killeen

The Killeen Kangaroos went 5-5 last season and missed the postseason out of a tough District 16-4A. But Coach Sam Jones returns a veteran club led by a potentially explosive offensive and a very good offensive line.

It could be a tough concept to grasp that a team could miss the playoffs by being the fourth best team in their respective district and still be a top ten team in the area. But that is exactly what the Killeen Kangaroos could be faced with in 2007 by the time their season is in the books.

The Roos return 15 total starters from a squad that finished 5-5 last season in District 16-4A, one of the toughest in the state that featured two state finalists (Copperas Cove and Waco High) and another team (Brownwood) that advanced to the Regional Finals.

Coach Sam Jones could have his best offense since 2004 when the Roos were led by all-Central Texas standouts Juaquin Iglesias, now at Oklahoma, and Columbus Givens. Quarterback Alijawon White returns as one of the nine offensive holdovers from 2006 and he as some outstanding weapons on the perimeter with speedsters Levi Fuson and T.J. Hill back at receiver. The loss of Nicholas Norman means someone will have to step up at running back, but the Roos will be fielding one of the top offensive lines in the area with 2008 blue chipper David Grant leading the way, along with 2009 standout prospect Rhonte Scales.

Six starters return on defense for the Roos with the headliner being senior defensive end Demetris Daniels, who was a first team all-District selection last season. Bryan Holloway will anchor the defensive line with Daniels while senior Justin Harkress will be counted on to lead the secondary.

The kicking game will also be a plus for the Roos as both kicker Matt Funk and punter Jordan Ramos are back.

The Roos have some stiff competition to face as they will attempt to grab one of the three playoff spots in the district and they will need to have some breaks go their way as last season's three playoff clubs could all be state ranked to start 2007.
