After a solid 7-4 campaign in 2006 the Fort Stockton Panthers are hoping for an extended stay in the playoffs after a loss in the area playoffs last year to Andrews 53-28. FSHS brings back 16 letterman along with help from a 7-3 JV squad and 8-2 Freshman team. Head Coach Tom Howard lists depth and experience as strengths for the Panthers heading into 2007.
On offense the Panthers have back 7 starters, Fort Stockton's offense begins and ends with QB Sergio Corral who boasts excellent size and a big arm. Corral was also an all-district selection as a punter. The Panthers will count on some younger guys at the skill positions, but they do have RB Frankie Ruiz back. The offensive line should be a strength as it is led by Zach Rodriguez who was second team all-district last season.
On defense, the Panthers have 6 starters back led by DE Desi Urias and DB Allan Mendez. The Panthers will have to improve on this side of the ball if hey do plan on making a deeper playoff run. FSHS was 0-4 against 3A playoff teams in 2006 and they allowed an average of over 37 points per game in those losses.
The coaches in 1-3A have the Panthers pegged to win the district title, but it's far from a shoe in. Despite the big losses graduation took on Monahans and Clint both teams will still be right in the thick of things in the race. Ft Stockton was knocked off by Monahans 35-0 and they lost to Clint 35-27 in 2006.
