The Ennis Lions didn't exactly have a very successful year in 2006 by Ennis standards. Usually a 1 or 2 loss season combined with a 3 or 4 round playoff trip is the norm. But three regular season losses combined with a first round playoff loss to Brownwood just doesn't sit right with the Lion contingent and Ennis is out to change that in 2007.

When you think of Ennis, you usually think of a high-powered offense and excellent quarterbacks. This might not be the case in the 2007 season as the Lions will start with an inexperienced quarterback (Chris Lewis) behind center. Running back Lee King (154-846, 8 tds.) will be Ennis' brightest star on offense and will be counted on the most. King is also expected to play double duty at linebacker this year. The offensive line will be solid led by Sam Chmelar and Will Farmer. Wide receiver Courtney Brooks (32-438, 4 tds.) will be Lewis' main target.

Defensively the Lions will be as good as ever at the linebacker positions. Lee King will help out the talented linebacker duo of Andy Laza and Nico D'Amato. The secondary is talented but young. Sophomore Jason Vavra impressed coaches this spring with his play at the safety position. Cornerback Ivan Solis is expected to lead the secondary. Defensive tackles Jose Sanchez and LaQuardia Williams both return to anchor the defensive front.

What we do know is that the Lions will be good at running the ball this year and will field a solid defense. They might take a few lumps early but this team will be running on all cylinders once the district season begins. Ennis has a good chance as anyone in this district to win the district title and continuing the "norm" of playing late in November. However, facing Waco or Brownwood in the first round will be a tall task.
