Klein Oak vows improvement in 2007

The Klein Oak Panthers only went 5-5 last year during the regular season and did not beat a single 5A team with a winning record. If it were not for the first year of the new UIL rule that 4 teams make the playoffs the Panthers would have been watching from the stands.

Was last seasons playoff run just a lucky streak?

Instead, they magically turned everything around and became the best team in Klein Oak history as they defeated Oak Ridge, Cedar Park, and Richardson Berkner before finally losing to Garland in the State Quarterfinals. Regardless of their playoff run being luck or not, Klein Oak returns a loaded team both sides of the ball.

The offense will be doing quite well as they will have 3 players that run 4.3 in the 40 yard dash. The entire backfield can be interchangeable in their multi-gun offense because of such athletic players that can throw and run. JR RB Ossam Cook is one of the three and was 2nd team All-District last season. Spring High School transfer SR RB/WR/QB Terrance Robinson also runs a 4.3 and can play anywhere. All-State returner SR WR/RB DeSean Hales has verbally committed to the Texas Longhorns and will try to will his team once again this season to a deep playoff run. These three players may not have specific positions that they will line up in but you can bet that they will all be on the field a lot making spectacular plays from somewhere! SR QB/P Wes Theiss was All-District as a punter last season and is a good athlete as well as kicker. The quarterback spot could have a rotating door as you could see players such as Theiss, Robinson, and SOPH Tyler Mason. SR WR/DB Scott Arthur started on both sides of the ball at times last year. The offensive line will contain returning lettermen SR TE Mike Rayburn, SR OL Kenneth Hunter, SR OL Tyler Condiff, and JR OL Clint Naron. JR OL Kevin Forsch started on the JV last year and will see action on the line as well.

The Klein Oak defense will give also give multiple looks and will be second to none as it is led by 3 year starter and 1st team All-District SR DE Mark Hunter. The d-line will also have returning lettermen JR DE Jordan Najvar, JR DL Cody Davis, and SR DL Logan Studdert. SR LB Chase Thomas is a returning starter but made a change from DB. Linebackers will be deep as you could see a lot of players in like SR Erich Cables, SOPH Demetrich Gilliam, JR Jacob Shankle, and SOPH Walter Williams. The corners will be returning starter SR Scott Arthur and JR Jeremy Mayweather. The other parts of the secondary will consist of top prospect SR Alex Mirenda, JR Brian Corcoran, JR Kevin Williams, SR Colton Morgan, and SOPH Luke Muncie.

As you can tell Klein Oak will try to attack their opposition from all over the field with every athlete they have on the team from both sides of the ball. The main question for the Klein Oak Panthers is can they translate last years success into the '07 regular season and beyond? With the amount of threatening players they have on the roster this year, I would not count the Panthers out at any point once again in this extremely tough District 15-5A.
