TPI Centex 5A Top 10: No. 2 S.A. Madison

The rest of Sotuh Central Texas better hope they got their shots in on the Madison Mavericks last season because the Mavs are ready to roll with a talented team in 2007 that looks like it could make a lot of noise come playoff time.

Go to any prestigious program in the state of Texas and see if a 5-5 season will cut the mustard.

In most if not all cases it will not, and the Madison Mavericks cannot wait to get the sour taste of a .500 season without a trip to the playoffs out of the their collective mouths.

Coach Jim Streety returns 13 starters from last season's team and the experience and the return of several key veterans will make the Mavericks a serious contender to come out of Region IV come playoff time.

The No. 2 ranked Class 5A team in Central Texas returns five starters on offense but of the five returning, the most important player from last year's squad is back in the presence of senior running back Devin Thomas. A first team all-District and all-State selection, Thomas rushed for over 1,800 yards and 23 touchdowns in just 10 games last season including setting the city's single game rushing record with 487 yards against Reagan. An explosive, downhill runner, Thomas recently committed to Arkansas and could be in for an even bigger season as a senior as the Mavericks' top lineman, senior Josh Corby, also returns.

The defense welcomes back eight starters including a pair of bona fide Division I prospects in senior linebacker Jason McLean and junior defensive back Andre Green. McLean was a first team all-District selection last season and returns to lead the defense along with Green, one of the best defensive back prospects in the Class of 2009.
