George McFarland did an excellent job of turning Sam Houston around last season. Despite having only one win within the entire system in 2005, he got his team to believe and they won two games in 2006 - and they were very competitive despite going winless in district. They lost by only 3 points to Arlington Bowie and Arlington after solid wins against Naaman Forest and Lakeview Centennial. This season, they return 13 starters, but they lose one of their brightest running backs to Mansfield Timberview.
The offense will have to retool to do as well as it did last season. They have two solid wide receivers in Travis McKay and Eric Ferguson. Replacing their running back will be tough. The offensive line will be solid led by Aaron Najera and Jerry Salas.
The solid part of the team will be in the defense this season. Carl Jones leads the defensive line. The linebackers will be solid with Brandon Morris, Brandon Baker and Michael Kitchen. The secondary will be speedy, but not have much depth with Ramon Smith and Brenston Baker.
Although Sam Houston is about the only safe pick anyone will make in 8-5A (a last place team) - this is a team gaining confidence. I do think they will likely have a worse season record wise this year, but I do think they will continue to grow within the system, and with a favorable realignment, they may have solid success in 2008.
