Lakeview Centennial's team looked as if they just won the district championship in Wylie this season. They won their pool and then qualified for the state tournament in triple overtime - both against teams thought to be more talented. This team is a dark horse this season, but it has to replace some big name players to get back into the playoff hunt. 12 starters and 25 lettermen return this season for the Lakeview Centennial Patriots.
A new quarterback and a new running back will take over this season. Last season, Daren Dillard led the way. This season, Cameron Brewster takes over at quarterback and the tandem of Anthony Maddox and Vance Thomas will be dangerous at running back. Last season, Dillard was clearly their best player and the offense relied too much on him. This season, with a more balanced attack, they may fare better. Xavier Pete, Kadeem Moss, Tucker Simmons and Cecil Harwell anchor the line.
The defense has a chance to be special this season. In a high flying district with South Garland and Rockwall, Corrigan POwell may be one of the best defensive backs in the area. For them to be successful this season, he will need help. A bright spot on the defensive line is Donnell Hill. He has great size and speed to rush the passer, but teams may elect to double cover him this season.
The fourth playoff spot is up for grabs - and there is no team that is out of the race, even at this point in the season. Lakeview Centennial may not have the depth, but they showed at the Wylie 7 on 7 tournament that they certainly have the heart this season. Although they did not fare well in College Station, if it is in the fourth quarter, you can't count out Lakeview Centennial. Look for it to finish in the bottom half of the pack in district, yet be competitive in many games this season.
