What a season of ups and downs for the Red Oak football team. The "Ups" happened in non-district play as the Hawks smashed the competition. In their three wins, Red Oak outscored the competition 127-21. Their only loss came to a very talented Lake Dallas squad. Quarterback Austin Elrod (134-262, 1,543 yds. 15 TDs) found himself leading DFW quarterbacks with the most passing yards early on. These Hawks were confident and rightly so. Red Oak went into the bye week right before their district opener against Waxahachie.

And then the "Downs" began to happen. The two weeks off didn't pay off for the Hawks as they dropped the district opener to Waxahachie by a score of 70-15. In fact, the Hawks finished the rest of the season without a win. Their closest game was a 25-16 loss to Midlothian. To add insult to injury, head coach Danny Edelman resigned in the off-season to take a head coaching job at Bay City.

Red Oak lost quarterback Austin Elrod and his trusty receiver in Amondo Lopez (51-864 yds. 11 TDs) to graduation. Their main offensive weapon coming back will be junior running back Nic Boyd (94-780 yds. 7 TDs). Quarterback Kevin Pruett (29-54, 325 yds. 2 TDs) played sparingly last year and will take over the reigns behind center.

Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Mike Shields was moved up to the head coach position in the spring. Shields will inherit a team that will return 8 defensive starters led by linebacker Tim Hooper (117 tackles) and defensive end Taylor McCuller (86 tackles).

If the Hawks had last year's offense and this year's defense – they could be a threat to be a playoff team. But in this tough district you have to have both. Red Oak struggled to put points on the board last year with a better than normal offense and it'll be almost impossible to do the same this year with less experienced players. The Hawk defense will be relied upon early and often in 2007. Red Oak should once again finish dead last in District 15-4A.
