Lake Worth-Boyd Scrimmage Report

Lake Worth showed that despite graduating a solid senior class, they will still be a playoff contender as they for the most part had their way with Class 2A State Semi-Finalist Boyd in Thursday night's scrimmage.

BOYD- Both the Boyd Yellow Jackets and Lake Worth Bullfrogs engaged in their final pre-season tune-up before both teams start regular season play on Thursday night at Yellow Jacket Stadium. Class 3A Lake Worth for the most part held the upper hand for the majority of the scrimmage but BHS had their moments. A bit of a surprise was the fact that Boyd which is a much smaller school than Lake Worth seemed to have the advantage when the team's second teamers were out on the field.

The teams started the scrimmage with a controlled portion with each team's first and second team offense getting 15 plays. Lake Worth's offense got the ball first and behind some powerful running from RB DeAndre Davis and some nifty moves from QB Angel Reyna the offense marched right down the field and scored quickly as Reyna would punch it in from 2 yards out. LWHS would move well after scoring the touchdown as Reyna went to the air to TE Matt Harmon and WR Josh Wilcoxson, however the Yellow Jacket defense was up to the test as Reyna was picked off by a BHS defensive back.

Lake Worth's defense proved to be very quick and aggressive and Boyd's first offense had a lot of trouble adjusting to the speed. Eventually some quick draw plays and screens slowed the Bullfrogs rush and Boyd was able to muster a 37 yard touchdown pass. (We were unable to get names for the Boyd players as they had no numbers on their jerseys). Neither team's second offense was able to do much in the remainder of the controlled portion of the scrimmage although, Boyd's offense moved the ball well.

The team's then went to one live quarter of action and for the first 9 minutes it was all Lake Worth. The Bullfrogs got a 52 yard run from Davis on the first play from scrimmage to set the tone for Lake Worth. The drive stalled as a high snap from center went over Reyna's head and forced the Bullfrogs to try a 44 yard field goal, which kicker Gage Park nailed with ease to put the Frogs up 3-0. Lake Worth's defense then forced a three and out and a Boyd punt and the Bullfrogs went back on the attack once again. Lake Worth used a nice mix of short passes and punishing runs from Davis to march down the field against BHS and this drive ended with a 6 yard touchdown run from Davis and with the PAT Lake Worth led 10-0 with less than 4 minutes to go. Both team's then inserted their second teamers back into the game and Boyd was able to use their two minute offense to score on a 24 yard touchdown pass with less than a minute left. BHS went for two and was successful to make the final margin in the live quarter 10-8.

Next Thursday night Boyd opens the season at the CH Collins Athletic Complex in Denton against Gunter, while Lake Worth will host Prosper on Friday night to open their season.
