MESQUITE- Despite controlling the action for the most part throughout the game the Midlothian Panthers (0-1) could not get out of their own way in a last second 18-14 loss to the Mesquite Poteet Pirates (1-0) on Thursday night at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. The Panthers who missed a field goal, also turned the ball over twice including one fumble that lead to the Pirates game winning score and they had a botched fake punt which gave the Pirates a four yard field.
Poteet QB Andrew Maddox making his first start at QB, was the star for Poteet racking up 200 total yards and 3 touchdowns. Maddox's performance outshined a solid effort by MHS RB Caleb MacEachren who ran for 162 yards and a touchdown.
After stopping Midlothian on a three and out the Poteet offense struck quickly as QB Andrew Maddox broke through the line untouched for a 79 yard sprint to the end zone to put PHS up 6-0 as the PAT was blocked. Midlothian however quickly responded as after starting at their own 3 they marched 97 yards with the drive capped by an 18 yard touchdown run by QB Bryce Petty, the key play on the march being a 44 yard run by Caleb MacEachren.
After forcing a Poteet punt MHS appeared to have good field position but a penalty 2 sacks and a 12 yard loss put the Panthers inside their own 5, then Midlothian inexplicably decided too try a fake punt on 4th and 35 from inside their 5 which Poteet stopped for a one yard gain. Poteet took advantage of the short field as Maddox scored his second touchdown of the evening on a 4 yard run, the two point try was stopped and with less than a minute left Poteet led 12-7.
After the Poteet score, Midlothian moved inside the 15 yard line on a methodical drive but Vince Frawley's 31 yard field goal was wide right and Poteet dodged a bullet. The Panthers defense held strong against Poteet and they were able to force a Pirates punt, Midlothian was able to put together an excellent drive highlighted by a 50 yard pass from Bryce Petty to Dylan Fowler to put the Panthers inside the red zone. The drive was capped by a 16 yard touchdown run by Caleb MacEachren. Poteet's Skye Dawson returned the ensuing kickoff out to midfield, but the Pirates drive stalled and a 45 yard field goal was no good as time expired to end the first half.
After getting an interception near midfield to start the second half Midlothian was unable to take advantage as the Panthers went three and out. MHS then late in the third quarter dodged a big bullet as a muffed punt nearly ended up in a Poteet Pirate's hands. Poteet early in the fourth quarter caught a huge break as MHS QB Bryce Petty was hit and the ball came loose, the play looked to be an incomplete pass but the officials called in a fumble and the Pirates had the ball at the Midlothian 43. Late in the fourth quarter it appeared Midlothian was in the process of salting the game away when a fumbled option pitch gave the Pirates new life. A 27 yard run inside the 10 by Maddox on 4th and 5 put the Pirates in prime scoring position. The Pirates were stopped on 3 straight running plays and on fourth and goal from the one PHS appeared to be in position to bring junior kicker Jason Fowler on for the game winnning kick. However after two straight timeouts by the Midlothian coaching staff, Poteet elected to go for six and brought the offense out and Maddox delivered with the one yard QB sneak to give the Pirates the 18-14 win.
