Abilene High Rolls Past Austin Westlake

Abilene's defense held defending Class 5A Division 1 Runner-Up Austin Westlake to only 101 yards of total offense in a 31-10 win on Saturday night.

ABILENE- The Abilene Eagles (1-0) led by LB Chris Williams totally shut down the Austin Westlake Chaparrals offense in a 31-10 win on Saturday night at Shotwell Stadium in the final game of the GoFridayNight.com Champions Classic. QB Spens Lackey led the offense as he totaled over 300 yards of offense, and his favorite target was WR J.J. James who caught 11 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.

After forcing a three and out on Westlake's first possession, the Abilene offense took advantage of good field position and moved the ball inside the Chaparrals 25 yard line. However the drive stalled and the Eagles were forced to settle for a 40 yard Brandon Hill field goal for a 3-0 lead. Westlake got their first break of the game early in the second quarter after forcing an AHS three and out they started on the Eagles 24 yard line due to a nine yard punt by Abilene. Westlake wouldn't cash the short punt into a touchdown but they did get points as Justin Tucker's 23 yard field goal was good and with 4:51 left in the first half the game was tied at 3. Abilene late in the first half put together a very impressive drive right before the half as they marched 82 yards to the WHS 5 but Brandon Hill missed a chip shot 22 yard field goal as time expired to leave the score tied at 3 at the half.

Abilene started out the second half with an impressive drive and Lackey would hook up with WR J.J. James who made a sensational diving catch for the 10 yard touchdown reception and with nine minutes left in the third quarter Abilene led 10-3. AHS would then force a three and out and they'd get an excellent punt return by Ben Wadsworth down to the Westlake 29 and 4 plays later RB Keithy Flye would score from 10 yards out and with the PAT Abilene would jump out to a 17-3 lead. Austin Westlake finally got some momentum late in the third quarter as Jordan Etier returned an Abilene punt 38 yards down to the Abilene 7. Westlake would take advantage of the excellent return as Mike Walker would score on a 3 yard touchdown pass from Walker Kobelan to cut the lead to 17-10 with 11:27 left in the game. AHS would respond with an impressive drive of their own as backup TB Zach Bass would score from 15 yards out to put the Eagles back up by 14 at 24-10 with 9:03 left in the game. Abilene would force a three and out from the Chaparrals and then they'd go on a time consuming drive mostly on the ground to eat up nearly the remainder of the game as Zach Bass would score from two yards out for the exclamation point touchdown to make it 31-10 Eagles which would be the final margin.
