UTEP commit said he is ‘solid'

The Pearland football program has been producing some of the state's top athletes for many years now. For the Class of 2008, DT Bernard Obi is one of these players. After a strong junior season and a summer camp or two, Obi gave his verbal commitment. TPI talked with Obi about the commitment and when he plans to visit El Paso.

Pearland defensive tackle Bernard Obi (6-3, 225) was a player who sort of flew under the radar last season. But after spring ball, UTEP was one of the main schools that began pursuing the Oiler defender.

Over the summer, Obi attended the Miner football camp in West Houston. According to Obi, the coaches told him if he performs well at the camp there will be an offer for him. And Obi performed, and the offer came. Soon after, so did the commitment.

"The coaches were real straight forward with me," Obi said. "It was my only offer, and after talking with the coaches, I felt it was a good fit for me. They (Miner coaches) are what helped me make the decision on UTEP."

Obi said he plans to take an official visit to El Paso on October 13 when the Miners take East Carolina.

"On my decision I am solid, very solid," Obi said.
