Week 2 Central Texas District Insider: 17-4A

17-4A is the first Central Texas district to get district play started and it all beins in Thursday night.

DISTRICT 17-4A INSIDER: Week 2

OVERVIEW
Central Texas' lone nine-team district gets league play cranked up this week with eight of the nine teams in this Austin based district in action. All of three of the potential top four teams in the district are in action with Travis taking on Manor, McCallum facing Lanier, and LBJ taking on Crockett. Elgin is idle this week.

MATCHUPS & PICKS (ranking is TPI area rank)
Crockett (0-1) at LBJ (1-1)
Nelson Field will be the site for this district opener between two teams that bring different strengths to the table. LBJ will come at the Cougars with speed namely Stephone Mercer and Omasha Brantley. Crockett's defense is their strength with senior linebacker Mychal Williams and junior defensive lineman Kevin Park leading the way. This game wont be decided until the fourth quarter, but the Jags have too many weapons on offense. JEFF'S PICK: LBJ by 9

Johnston (0-2) at Reagan (0-1)
This is a game between two teams that were outscored by a combined 119-0 last week. The Rams came close to a win in Week 0 against Lehman, and this is one of their best chances to break their long losing streak. The Raiders however faced a solid Stony Point club last week and should be ready to play. JEFF'S PICK: Reagan by 6

Lanier (0-2) at McCallum (0-2)
The Knights are a surprising 0-2, especially considering how they were blown out by Austin High last week. Lanier has been outscored 92-20 in their two losses and this should be a nice bounce-back game for Pat Honeycutt's team. JEFF'S PICK: McCallum by 20

Travis (2-0) at Manor (1-1)
Coach Drew Sanders and the Rebels are atop the district standings with big wins over 5A Akins and Lehman last week thanks in large part to their three-headed offensive monster of Drew McGarrahan, Larry Johnson, and Kyle Godbolt. The Rebels should make it 3-0 this week against a Manor team that went to the wire to beat 3A Taylor last week. JEFF'S PICK: Travis by 17

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Drew McGarrahan, QB, Travis
McGarrahan had a big game in the Rebels 33-0 shutout of Lehman going 12-for-19 with 172 yards and two touchdowns and also scored a touchdown on the ground.

DISTRICT MVP CANDIDATES:
1. Kyle Godbolt, WR/DB, Travis – gets the job done on both sides of the ball for the Rebels
2. Derrick Grant, WR/DB, LBJ – he continues to develop as a receiving threat for the Jaguars
3. Kevin Lusson, QB, McCallum – he has been a bright spot for the Knights despite their slow start

KEY INDIVIDUAL MATCHUP THIS WEEK
Kyle Godbolt vs. Josh Sykes – The Rebels top defender will be seeing a lot of Sykes, Manor's top receiving threat. Sykes leads the Mustangs this season with seven catches for 162 yards and a touchdown.

DISTRICT STOCK REPORTS:
Stock Up: Travis
The Rebels have gotten off to a fast start and look like serious playoff contenders. If they can get by Manor, they will be 3-0 going into their game with Elgin next week.

Stock Down: Elgin's schedule
It is going to be hard for the Wildcats and new head coach Danny Lauve to get into a grove. Their opener against Caldwell was rained out, they played Hutto last week, now they have the week off.
