Week 2 Central Texas District Insider: 25-4A

Connally and Lake Travis, both ranked in the TPI 4A Central Texas area rankings, get a taste of what the Central Texas 5A ranks offer as they host Killeen Ellison and Round Rock Westwood, respectively.

The top two teams in the district, Connally and Lake Travis, both have tough games against area ranked 5A clubs as Connally hosts Killeen Ellison while Lake Travis hosts Round Rock Westwood. Burnet and Lampasas are both looking to bounce back after tough losses while Marble Falls is hoping the momentum from a big win over Austin Crockett will carry over to next week.

MATCHUPS & PICKS (ranking is TPI area rank)
5A No. 3 Killeen Ellison at No. 5 Pflugerville Connally (1-0)
The Cougars won Coach Howard McMahan's debut last week by topping Fredericksburg in the Alamodome. The Cougars will need to take care of the football and not give Ellison's explosive offense a short fields to work with. Look for a close one but Ellison's offense will make the difference. JEFF'S PICK: Ellison by 6

5A No. 5 Round Rock Westwood (1-0) at No. 7 Lake Travis (1-1)
The Cavaliers must quickly bounce back after dropping a heartbreaker to Westlake last week as they face a Westwood team two weeks removed from their upset of Austin High. The Cavs will need to cut down on the turnovers they suffered against the Chaps and try and put pressure on Tyler Grabarkewitz. Again, this game should be still a good one midway through the fourth quarter, but Westwood should pull this one out. JEFF'S PICK: Westwood by 6

No. 3 Brownwood at Burnet (1-1)
It was a tough week for the Bulldogs in Week 1 as they got up early on Liberty Hill but fell 34-17 after their offense was held to less than 140 total yards. The week they get another stiff test from Brownwood and the Bulldogs might find it very difficult to stop Lions quarterback Casey Pachall. JEFF'S PICK: Brownwood by 8

Dripping Springs (1-1) at 5A Austin Akins (1-1)
After beating rival Wimberley last week, the Tigers set their sights on the 5A Eagles. Jordan Moore is a difference maker at quarterback for the Tigers and he should make plenty of plays as the Tigers will likely be sitting nicely at 2-1 after this one. JEFF'S PICK: Dripping Springs by 14

3A Taylor (0-2) at Lampasas (0-1)
The Badgers lost to Waco University last week and penalties played a big part in their demise. This week they will be back at home and look for the Badgers to get their first win of the young season. JEFF'S PICK: Lampasas by 16

Marble Falls (1-1) at No. 10 Del Valle (1-0)
Thor Woerner ran wild on Crockett last week rushing for 207 yards in the win. They will need plenty of big plays to get through a Del Valle defense that shut down a speedy LBJ squad last week. JEFF'S PICK: Del Valle by 12

Cedar Park Vista Ridge (0-1) vs. 5A No. 6 Austin Anderson (2-0) The Rangers lost their season opener to Hewitt Midway last week and this week they face an Anderson team that is looking for revenge from last season's loss. That does not make for a happy bunch of Trojans coming to Cedar Park this week. JEFF'S PICK: Anderson by 20 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Thor Woerner, QB, Marble Falls
As just mentioned, Woerner rushed for 207 yards on 18 carries to lead the Mustangs to a 42-14 lopsided win over Austin Crockett last week.

1. Darius Darks, UTIL, Connally – he does it all for the Cougars
2. Garrett Gilbert, QB, Lake Travis – had a late interception against Westlake but showed great improvement
3. Spencer Otto, QB, Hendrickson – had a tough week last week, but if he plays like he did in Week 0 then the Hawks could be in the playoff hunt

Darius Darks vs. The Ellison defense – the Eagles will need to know where Darks is at all times. The blue chip prospect enters the game as the Cougars leading rusher, receiver, and second leading passer so the new coaching staff is looking to get the ball in hands anyway possible.
