DISTRICT 26-4A INSIDER: Week 2

OVERVIEW
Only idle New Braunfels Canyon will not see action as the rest of the district will see action in Week 2. Hays Consolidated has a very important game this week against Cedar Park, the area's No. 2 ranked team in Class 5A. New Braunfels will face Beeville Jones, Del Valle will take on Marble Falls, Clemens is at Boerne and undefeated Steele will host Harlandale. In other action Lockhart will look to get their first win of the year against Floresville while Lehman will face Edison.

MATCHUPS & PICKS (ranking is TPI area rank)
Beeville Jones (2-0) at No. 4 New Braunfels (2-0)
Jones has won their two games against Medina Valley and Laredo Cigaroa by a combined score of 96-21. This week however the Unicorns, fresh off of a 42-14 beat down of Seguin, will be ready. The defense has been come up with timely stops, and that's all they will need to do with Ryan Perez running their offense that can score in the blink of an eye. JEFF'S PICK: New Braunfels by 10

No. 8 Schertz Clemens (2-0) at Boerne (0-2)
The Buffaloes are showing just how good their program is running as for the second year in a row thety have to replace nearly every starter from the previous year and just like 2006, they are off to a hot start. Look for that to continue against a Boerne team that lost a tough one to Hays last week. JEFF'S PICK: Clemens by 14

Marble Falls (1-1) at No. 10 Del Valle (1-0)
The Cardinals shut down LBJ last week thanks in large part to defensive back Randall Taylor, who had three interceptions in the game. This week the task will be to stop Marble Falls quarterback Thor Woerner, who rushed for 207 yards against Austin Crockett, but expect the Cardinals to be up to the task. JEFF'S PICK: Del Valle by 12

5A No. 2 Cedar Park (1-0) at Hays Consolidated (1-0)
The Rebels got their first win of the season last week against Boerne, but they might be a little over matched in this one. The Rebels will need to stop the run effectively to have a chance as Cedar Park backs Hunter Dixon and Dedrick McKnight both helped pace the Timberwolves in their 34-0 win against Harker Heights. JEFF'S PICK: Cedar Park by 12

Harlandale (1-1) at Schertz Steele (2-0)
The Knights remain undefeated after topping San Antonio Stevens last week. Look for them to continue their winning ways against a Harlandale club that lost to San Antonio Central Catholic last week. JEFF'S PICK: Steele by 8

Kyle Lehman (1-1) at Edison (1-1)
Lehman was shut out by Austin Travis last week and will try to get back on the winning track this week. I'll take the Lobos in a close one. JEFF'S PICK: Lehman by 1

Floresville (2-0) at Lockhart (0-1)
The Lions lost to Class 3A Gonzales last week but picking up their first win against an undefeated Floresville team will be tough. JEFF'S PICK: Floresville by 16

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ryan Perez, QB, New Braunfels
For the second week in a row Perez takes home the top honor after he had over 260 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns against Seguin.

DISTRICT MVP CANDIDATES:
1. Ryan Perez, QB, New Braunfels – the catalyst for the Unicorns offense
2. Charles Ross, RB, Clemens, he has been the Buffaloes biggest offensive threat this season
3. Robert Clay, RB, New Braunfels Canyon – only a junior, Clay is picking up where he left off after a monster sophomore season

KEY INDIVIDUAL MATCHUP THIS WEEK
Cedar Park running backs vs. Hays defensive front – as mentioned the Timberwolves backfield duo of Dedrick McKnight and Hunter Dixon torched Harker Heights last week. It will be up to the Rebels to secure tackles and not allow these breakaway backs to bust long runs.

DISTRICT STOCK REPORTS:
Stock Up: Del Valle
The Cardinals looked like a playoff sleeper heading into and so far so good after their convincing win over LBJ last week.

Stock Down: Lehman
The Lobos struggled for their first win of the season in Week 0 against Austin Johnston and if they cannot fix their turnover problem and keep getting hit by injuries, it will be a long second season.
