Western Hills Blitzes Granbury 33-20

Western Hills capitalized on several Granbury misuces in rout to jumping out to a 33-7 lead in the third quarter and then cruising to a 33-20 win Thursday night.

FORT WORTH- The Western Hills Cougars (2-1) behind 105 total yards and 3 touchdowns from Rafael Sneed held off a late charge from the Granbury Pirates (0-3) to escape with a 33-20 win on Thursday night at Clark Stadium. WHHS only posted 287 total yards but the difference in the game was Granbury's 17 penalties for 110 yards in the game. The Pirates also fumbled at the Cougars one as they were about to score and had a punt blocked for a touchdown as they kept giving Western Hills gift after gift.

Granbury on the opening drive wasted little time in getting on the board as QB Steven Darrow on an option keeper scooted around left end for a 75 yard touchdown run to put GHS up 7-0 with Kason Peterson's PAT. On the ensuing kick off Western Hills' Nowell Hall returned the kick 69 yards down to the GHS 22. The Cougars would quickly tie the score as QB Ryan Stuck found Rafael Sneed for a 25 yard touchdown pass and with Lindon Swarqua's PAT it was tied at seven with 9:47 left in the first quarter. After forcing a Granbury punt the Cougars would respond again as Sneed would score this time on the ground from two yards out to give the Cougars a 13-7 lead as the PAT was blocked. Midway through the second quarter after both teams exchanged punts twice Western Hills would put together a nice drive which culminated in an 18 yard scoring run by Leonard Hall. The PAT was wide left and WHHS led 19-7, which would be the score at the half.

Western Hills after a shaky start in the second quarter would extend the lead with 4:26 left in the third as Sneed would score his third touchdown of the game on a 27 yard run on a 4th and 2 play. Then he'd tack on the two point conversion on the ground to give the Cougars 27-7. After forcing a Granbury punt the Cougars got another big play as Lawrence Franklin blocked a Darrow punt and Lance Smith would scoop the ball up at the 3 and stroll into the end zone to give the Cougars a 33-7 lead late in the third. Granbury would add a late touchdown with 3:13 left in the game as Jordon Knul would score from 3 yards out to make it 33-13 as the PAT was wide left. The Granbury defense would finally make a play as CB Devon Davis would strip Rafael Sneed of the ball and recover the fumble at the WHHS 25 to give the Pirates some hope. Davis would strike again as he would score on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Darrow and with the PAT the Cougars lead was cut to 33-20. Granbury would recover the onside kick at the Cougars 41 to make things interesting with 1:39 left. The Pirates would be unable to do anything with the onside kick as Darrow was picked off by Sneed and the Cougars would run the clock out to get the 33-20 win.

Next week Western Hills visits Saginaw High, while Granbury is idle.
