Sweetwater Notches First Win

Sweetwater got back to basics Saturday, which for the Mustangs is tough defense and running the ball. SHS did both well on Saturday in a 44-28 win over Decatur at the Mustang Bowl.

SWEETWATER- The Sweetwater Mustangs (1-2) used a punishing ground attack that rolled up 322 yards to roll past the Decatur Eagles (1-2) 44-28 in the third game of the TSTC Sammy Baugh Classic at the Mustang Bowl. Sweetwater FB Auston Davis was named game MVP as he ran for 98 yards to lead a balanced Mustangs attack. TE Keifer Adamez chipped in two touchdown catches and he blocked a punt as well to lead SHS.

Decatur got off to a rocky start as on the first play of the game QB Tim Metts was not ready for the shotgun snap and Sweetwater's Rufus McCann pounced on the loose ball at the 29 yard line and the Mustangs offense was quick to capitalize on the mistake as QB Zach Birdwell went 29 yards untouched on an option keeper to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead as the PAT was blocked. On Decatur's next possession McCann would strike again as this time he made a spectacular one handed interception of a Metts pass to give the Mustangs great field position, however Sweetwater was unable to take advantage as they were forced out on downs. Decatur would finally get their offense in gear as Metts found a wide open Chad Harrison over the middle for a 47 yard touchdown pass and with Jose Lira's PAT Decatur took a 7-6 lead with 7:25 left in the first quarter. Decatur would then catch a break of their own as Tyler Robbins would recover an onside kick to give DHS the ball at the Sweetwater 45. Decatur would take advantage of their short field as Harrison caught his second touchdown pass of the game this time from 23 yards out to give Decatur a 14-6 lead. Decatur would have another chance to score late in the first quarter but Jose Lira's 41 yard field goal was wide left. Sweetwater would answer back halfway through the second quarter as QB Zach Birdwell would hit a wide open Keifer Adamez over the middle for a 29 yard hookup, however the two point pass failed and Decatur held a slim 14-12 margin. Sweetwater's J.J. McCoy would make the next big play of the game as he would pick off Tim Metts to stop a potential Decatur scoring chance inside the 20. After a long run by FB Auston Davis to put the ball in Decatur territory Rufus McCann would cap the drive with a one yard plunge to make it 18-14 as once again the two point try failed. The turnover bug would strike Decatur once again as RB Josh Trant fumbled and it was recovered by a Sweetwater DB. The Mustangs were able to move the ball quickly down the field behind a long run by Davis and nice grab along the sidelines by KeKe Wallace. The drive was capped by a 19 yard touchdown pass from Birdwell to Adamez, the PAT kick failed and SHS led 24-14 with less than a minute left in the half and the 24-14 lead would at the half.

Sweetwater would start the second half right where they left off as they would march right down the field and score on Martin Williams' one yard run, Cameron Studdard's PAT was true and early in the third SHS led 31-14. Early in the fourth quarter Sweetwater would add another score as Daniel Jackson would score from two yards out to make it 37-14 Sweetwater as the PAT was blocked. After forcing the Eagles to turn the ball over on downs, Sweetwater backup QB Jake Lawrence would tack on a two yard touchdown run and with the PAT Sweetwater held a commanding 44-14 lead. Decatur would add a late score as Monty Newton recovered a fumbled option pitch in the end zone to make it 44-21 Sweetwater. After recovering an onside kick the Eagles would add another score as this time Justin Unger scored on a two yard run to make it 44-28, DHS was unable to recover a second onside kick and Sweetwater ran out the clock.
