South Garland Wins a Thriller in Overtime

In a game full of twists and turns along major shifts in momentum, South Garland emerged victorious in OT with a 38-35 win over Garland Naaman Forest Thursday night at HBJ Stadium.

GARLAND-The South Garland Colonels (4-1, 2-0) behind 3 Nick Florence touchdown passes won an overtime thriller 38-35 to hand the Garland Naaman Forest Rangers (4-1, 1-1) their first loss of the season. Florence was sensational especially in the second half as he accounted for 216 passing yards and 3 touchdowns along with a rushing score. SGHS was able to escape with the win despite allowing Naaman Forest tailback Jonathon Miller to rush for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns.

South Garland got a huge break to start the game when after stopping the Naaman offense and forcing a punt NFHS punter Jonathan Patterson fielded a low snap but he put his knee on the ground at the 15. SGHS quickly would take advantage scoring after two plays on a 3 yard run by Michael Thomas, Jamie Salazar's PAT was true and with 8:34 left in the first quarter SGHS led 7-0. Naaman would quickly respond as the Rangers would move the ball down the field with ease all on the ground mostly utilizing the strong running of Jonathon Miller. Chantz Purvis would wind up capping the drive on a 5 yard run, Jonathan Patterson's PAT was good and the score was tied at 7-7 with 3:53 left in the first. South Garland would respond on their next drive as they moved 74 yards in less than three minutes scoring on a one yard run by QB Nick Florence to make it 14-7 SGHS. The key play on the drive was a 29 yard pass from Florence to Steven Osborne. Naaman wouldn't waste time with a response as Jonathon Miller would break loose for a 72 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14. Both teams would struggle on offense for the majority of the second quarter until with 1:19 left Florence hooked up with Thomas for a 13 yard scoring strike to put South Garland up 21-14. Naaman would have an answer right before the half as QB Levi Keffer would hook up with Derrick Osborn for a 52 yard scoring pass with two seconds left in the half to tie it up at 21.

After forcing a South Garland three and out, Naaman's offense took advantage of a short SGHS punt to take the lead as Miller would get his second score of the game on a two year run to make it 28-21 Naaman Forest with 6:07 left in the third. Michael Thomas would put the Colonels in good field position on the ensuing kickoff as he returned the kick to the Naaman Forest 42. South Garland was unable to take advantage of the good field position as the Rangers forced a three and out however Nick Florence's punt pinned the Rangers at their own one. Naaman would move the ball from the one all the way to the SGHS 26, but QB Keffer fumbled the ball on a QB keeper and it was recovered by DB Joseph Ibiloye. SGHS would take advantage of the turnover as Florence would hook up with Steven Osborne for a 16 yard touchdown pass to tie the score back at 28 with 10:40 left in the game. Naaman Forest pulled out a big play from their bag of tricks as on a third and 15 from their own 45, Keffer stepped back and threw a backwards pass to Jordan Lewis who hit an open John Harris in stride for a 55 yard touchdown pass to put the Rangers up 35-28 with 4:36 left in the game. South however would not be deterred as Florence would lead the Colonels back down the field as Florence hooked up with Darnell Smith for a 16 yard touchdown to tie the game at 35 with 3:13 left in the game. After forcing a NFHS punt, South Garland would take over on their own 22 with 57 seconds left, South would be unable to do anything with the ball and they would be forced to punt the ball back to NFHS with 29 seconds left. Naaman would run out the clock and the game would head to overtime.

South Garland would get the first crack at it on overtime, Naaman's defense would step up inside the ten yard line and hold SGHS to a 23 yard Salazar field goal to make it 38-35. The Colonels defense would step up and hold Naaman on downs to escape with a thrilling 38-35 overtime win.
