Denton Ryan Defense Dominates Sherman

Denton Ryan put together a stellar defensive effort to improve to 2-0 in 5-4A play with a 35-10 drubbing of Sherman on Saturday.

DENTON-The Denton Ryan Raiders (3-3, 2-0) turned a close game at halftime into a laugher as they rolled past the Sherman Bearcats (3-4, 1-2) 35-10 Saturday afternoon at the C.H. Collins Athletic Complex. QB Austin Axtell threw for 189 yards and 3 touchdowns while RB Jay Catlin anchored a balanced attack with 128 yards on the ground and a score. LB Jake Strickland blocked a punt that started the Raiders onslaught in the second half and Strickland also had an interception. Sherman was without their top players in the game as DE Jeremy Gray is still out nursing a torn meniscus, while RB Waymon James was out for violating team policy.

The Sherman defense made the first big play of the game as after a short punt into the wind Ryan had great field position but SHS LB Carey Gatewood picked off an Austin Axtell pass to snuff out a Raiders scoring chance. Sherman would move the ball into Ryan territory against a very strong wind out of the south but the Bearcats would turn the ball over on downs. After forcing a Ryan punt, Sherman got the wind early in the second quarter to start the second and the Bearcats would get the first points of the game on a 30 yard Ahmed Abo-Mahmood field goal to make it 3-0 Sherman. Denton Ryan would answer the Sherman score with an impressive 80 yard drive against the wind mostly behind the strong running of Jay Catlin. The scoring drive would be capped by an 8 yard touchdown pass from Austin Axtell to Antonio Anderson to put the Raiders up 7-3 with a little more than three minutes left in the first half. Sherman had two more chances to move the ball before the end of the half but they punted once and Ryan DB Peyton Whitlock right before the half would pick Sherman QB Matt Rome off to leave the score at 7-3 at the half.

Denton Ryan's special teams made the first big time play of the second hald as Jake Strickland blocked a Matt Rome punt and Josh Williams scooped up the loose ball at the 21 yards line and strolled in for a touchdown to make it 13-3 Denton Ryan with 9:28 left in the third. Strickland would strike again on the next possession as he picked off a Rome pass and returned it to the Sherman 30. Ryan would be unable to capitalize on the turnover as Nick Rinks was wide right on a 24 yard field goal attempt. After recovering a Sherman fumble Ryan would take advantage of this gift as D.J. Beshears would make a tremendous leaping catch of an Axtell pass for a 15 yard touchdown catch to make it 20-3 Denton Ryan with 5:32 left in the third quarter. Sherman would respond behind sophomore QB Madison Carter as he threw a 7 yard touchdown pass to Greg Millerick to cut the Denton Ryan lead to 20-10 with 1:47 left in the third. Denton Ryan would end any comeback hopes from Sherman as Beshears caught his second touchdown reception of the afternoon from 40 yards out and Tremaine Millender would add the two point run to make it 28-10 Denton Ryan as with 11:51 remaining in the game. After forcing Sherman out on downs, Ryan would tack on another score as Jay Catlin would score on a two yard run to make it 35-10 Denton Ryan and that would be the final.
