Cy Falls vs Cy Fair

Who will win the running back battle between Sam McGuffie and Shane Turner? Can either team duplicate their deep playoff runs from last season?

Cy Falls Golden Eagles vs Cy Fair Bobcats

Cy Falls 49, Cy Fair 37

Jay Darneal

This game was picked by ESPN to be broadcasted for obvious reasons. Cy Falls made the state championship game last season and Cy Fair had the youtube man of the year in Michigan verbal commit SR RB Sam McGuffie. Before too long you knew this game was going to be the Cy Falls offensive showcase instead and not even a red towel (watch video hilights for explanation) or Bill Belichick could stop it.

Cy Falls got an early start as SR RB Shane Turner scored on a 3 yard TD run with 11:38 left in the first quarter. Cy Fair struck back to tie the game up later in the first quarter on a 22 yard TD pass from SR QB Gavin West to JR TE Colby Goodwin. On the very next offensive series for the Golden Eagles they were forced into a 4th down and the snap to the punter was high and resulted in a safety to give the Bobcats a 9-7 advatage. Cy Fair then took advantage again and scored on a 1 yard quarterback sneak up the middle with QB West to lead 16-7. The second quarter had no scoring letdown as it started up with another TD run by RB Shane Turner, this time from 35 yards out. With the score at 16-14 Cy Fair hit paydirt again with QB West as he connected with SR WR John Leonhardt for a 23 yard TD pass that put the lead back to 9 at 23-14. The next play from scrimmage for Cy Falls was a 69 yard TD scamper by RB Turner to take it back to only a 2 point game. With only 30 seconds left on the clock before the half JR QB Kolby Gray hit SR WR Blake Shaw on a 10 yard TD pass that gave the Golden Eagles the halftime lead at 28-23.

The second half opened much like the first two quarters, with another TD by RB Shane Turner, but this time it was a 100 yard kickoff return which he describes in the interview after the game. (link at bottom). With 5:57 left in the third quarter QB Kolby Gray once again connect with WR Blake Shaw for a TD, this one from only 3 yards out. Cy Fair bounced back and got into the endzone on a 3 yard TD run by SR RB Wesley Cobb that made it 42-30. QB Gray was not done quite yet as he once again connected with WR Shaw on a 34 yard TD pass. The Cy Fair defense had a shot by shutting down the Golden Eagle offense in the fourth quarter but only scored once with 8:29 left as RB McGuffie scored on a 1 yard TD run that made the final score of 47-39.

Although you will hear that all-everything Cy Fair SR RB Sam McGuffie didn't perform up to expectations, he still managed to have 163 yards and 1 TD on 31 carries. Cy Fair SR QB Gavin West was 10-20 for 207 yards and 2 TD but had 2 INT also. SR WR Michael Zorn had 5 receptions for 136 yards. Those are not bad numbers until you see the offensive output that Cy Falls had! JR QB Kolby Gray was 13-19 for 222 yards and 3 TD as well as 1 INT. SR WR Darius Bolden had 4 receptions for 114 yards while SR WR Blake Shaw had 5 cathces for 76 yards and 3 TD. The night without a doubt belonged to SR RB Shane Turner, the lone offensive starter that returned from last seasons state title game team. Turner had 36 carries for 195 yards and 3 rushing TD as well as the 100 yard kickoff return as he totaled well over 300 all-purpose yards.
