Dallas Samuell Takes Charge of 13-4A Race

Defense was the story as the Samuell Spartans took a big step towards a playoff berth with a 10-0 win over Spruce on Saturday.

DALLAS- The Dallas Samuell Spartans (6-3, 4-1) completely shutdown the Dallas Spruce Timberwolves (6-3, 4-1) in a 10-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Kincaide Stadium. Samuell's Dawaylon Cook notched 2 interceptions along with 104 total yards and a touchdown pass to lead Samuell to a win that helps them take control of the District 13-4A race. Samuell's defense was the story holding Spruce to 73 total yards and forcing four turnovers.

After stopping Samuell three and out and forcing a punt the Timberwolves got great field position to start their opening drive at the Samuell 38. The Samuell defense would make a play as DaWaylon Cook would intercept a Daniel Mayberry pass and return it 20 yards to the Samuell 47 to give the Spartans the ball back. The Spruce defense would hold Samuell and force the Spartans out on downs, however Samuell's defense was also up to the task and on the ensuing Spruce punt Cook would strike again returning the Timberwolves punt 43 yards to the Spruce 37. The Spruce defense however was up to the task and once again they held the Spartans. After an exchange of punts, Samuell's DaWaylon Cook would again make a big play picking Mayberry off and returning it 23 yards down to the Spruce 9. The Spruce defense would hold Samuell to a field goal try and Ricardo Duron would nail a 32 yard field goal to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead with 3:55 left in the second quarter. After stopping the Timberwolves on their next drive the Spartans would put a touchdown up as Cook hit FB Robert Thompson for a 9 yard touchdown right before the half to give the Spartans a 10-0 lead at the half. Neither team in the second half was able to muster any offense as penalties and fumbles plagued an ugly second half.
