Everman Gets Past Fort Worth Dunbar

It was not the prettiest win for Everman, but the Bulldogs did improve to 11-0 on the season with a 57-21 win over Fort Worth Dunbar on Saturday.

BEDFORD- It wasn't always pretty but the Everman Bulldogs (11-0) did take care of business in a 57-21 win on Saturday afternoon over the Fort Worth Dunbar Wildcats (6-5) in a Class 4A Region 1 Division 2 bi-district playoff game. Everman's offense was the story as the Bulldogs rolled up 590 yards of total offense led by Sedrick Harris who was a perfect 10/10 passing for 244 yards and two touchdowns while Ryan Smith led the ground game with 91 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. With Dunbar's loss the Fort Worth ISD has now lost 19 football playoff games in a row.

Dunbar was able to move the ball on their first possession, but the Everman defense held and forced a Dunbar punt. Everman then took over at their own 20 yard line and marched 85 yards mostly through the air as Sedrick Harris hit Chris Franklin for a 26 yard scoring strike, on the PAT EHS ran the swinging gate and Ryan Smith got in to make it 8-0 Bulldogs. After forcing a Dunbar three and out Everman took advantage of a short field and scored again this time on a four yard by Clarence Jennings to put the Bulldogs up 15-0. Early in the second quarter with Dunbar driving to get back in the game, sophomore DB Barry Browning stepped in front a Nicholas Rockwell pass for the interception to stop the Wildcats best scoring chance of the game. The Bulldogs would then go 80 yards in just two plays as Chris Franklin hauled in a 57 yard touchdown pass from Harris to make it 22-0 with 9:32 left in the game. Dunbar would respond with a big play on special teams as Dominque Sanders would take a reverse on the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 22-7. Dunbar after forcing the first Everman punt of the game would make another big mistake as Darius White would mishandle a punt and give Everman the ball on the Dunbar 33. Everman would take advantage of the turnover as Ryan Smith would score on an 8 yard run to put Everman up 29-7 with 4:38 left in the first half and that would be the score heading to halftime.

The second half would start with Everman going to the ground game and moving right down the field on Dunbar, and Ryan Smith would cap the drive with a four yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 36-7, but Dunbar would quickly answer as on their first play from scrimmage Rockwell threw a perfect pass to Darius White who was well covered but White came down with a great catch and run for a 71 yard touchdown and the Everman lead was cut back to 26-14 with little more than six minutes left in the third quarter. Everman's offense would have their own answer going 66 yards in two plays as Smith got his third touchdown run of the game this one from 37 yards out to put the Bulldogs up 43-14 with 5:26 left in the third. Everman would insert the backups into the game late in the third quarter as sophomore RB Ruben Fletcher would score on a one yard run to extend the lead to 50-14 early in the fourth. More of Everman's young players would get in the act as sophomore RB Shawn Sanders would score on a six yard run with 3:02 left in the game to extend the lead to 57-14. Dunbar's Dominique Sanders would give the Wildcats fans something to cheer about as he notched his second kickoff return for a touchdown this one from 89 yards out to make it 57-21 Everman with 2:46 remaining and that would be the final margin as Everman would stop Dunbar and run the clock out. Next week the Bulldogs will take on Wichita Falls in an area playoff game on Friday night at 7:00pm at Saginaw High School.
