Celina Rolls Past Pittsburg 50-23

Celina's offense gave a clinic on being efficient in a 50-23 win over Pittsburg Friday night at Hanby Stadium.

MESQUITE- The Celina Bobcats (13-0) put on an impressive display of offensive efficiency as the Bobcats rolled up 618 yards of total offense including 506 rushing yards in a 50-23 rout of the Pittsburg Pirates (8-5) Friday night at Hanby Stadium. Celina's Charley Waldrep led the offense for CHS with 223 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns.

Pittsburg came out of the gate very strong behind QB Kendall Wright as the Pirates scored in four plays, the majority of that coming on a 56 yard touchdown run by Wright which put PHS up 7-0. Wright then made a huge play on defense stripping Celina RB Charley Waldrep of the ball at the Pitt 15 yard line to end a Bobcats scoring threat. Celina would stop Pittsburg and go on a lengthy drive to get on the board on a six yard touchdown run by freshman Jose Romeo, the PAT snap was bobbled and Pittsburg still held a 7-6 lead with 9:46 left in the first half. After stopping Pittsburg on their next possession the Bobcats would march right back down the field and score on a two yard run by Waldrep and with Seth Davis' two point run Celina jumped out to a 14-7 lead. On the first play of their next possession disaster struck Pittsburg as Kendall Wright was picked off by D'Anton Lynn who returned it 47 yards for a touchdown to put Celina up 21-7 with little more than 4 minutes left in the first half. Pittsburg would have an answer to stay in the game as Kendall Wright would score on an eight yard run to cut the Celina lead to 21-14 with 1:39 left in the first half. Pittsburg's defense would step up late in the half ending a Celina scoring chance as DB Mark Farmer would pick off a Seth Davis pass in the end zone to end the half at 21-14 Celina.

Celina came out of the locker room in the second half with a purpose moving the ball right down the field on the between the tackles as Jose Romero got his second touchdown run of the game on a three yard run to put Celina up 29-14 as Waldrep scored on the two point run. Pittsburg 223 would respond with a nice driving moving inside the Celina 10 but the Pirates would settle for a 33 yard Hunter Hammontree field goal to cut the Celina lead to 29-17 with 6:33 left in the third quarter. Celina would have their own answer scoring on a 43 yard touchdown run by Waldrep and with the PAT Celina would lead 36-17. Waldrep would bust another big play on Celina's next possession this time from 69 yards out to make it 43-17 Celina. Pittsburg would get some measure of revenge as Kendal Wright would score on a 91 yard punt return to cut the lead to 43-23 as the Pirates two point try failed with 8:50 left in the game. Ironically, the punt return would be on Celina's only punt of the night. Celina would add a touchdown with 7:35 left in the game on a four yard run by Troy McCartney to up the lead to 50-23. That score would wind up being the final tally as Celina took a knee inside the Pittsburg ten yard line to prevent any further damage and end the game at 50-23.

Next week Celina will take on the winner of tomorrow afternoon's contest between Texarkana Pleasant Grove and Glen Rose for the Class 3A Region 2 Division 2 Championship.
