IRVING-Defense was the story as the Abilene Eagles (13-1) knocked off the Lewisville Hebron Hawks (11-3) 20-10 Saturday afternoon at Texas Stadium, Abilene's defense held the high powered Hawks offense to only 10 points and in the fourth quarter made several key stands to aid in the win. Abilene QB Spens Lackey led the way for Abilene rushing for 66 yards and a touchdown and adding 86 passing yards and a touchdown. Hebron QB Tanner Marsh was solid in a losing effort along with Darius Staten who had 113 total yards and a touchdown.
For the first 17 minutes of the first half the tempo was completely dominated by the Hebron Hawks as not only did they dominate field position and total yardage but it appeared Abilene could do nothing right on offense, but midway through the second quarter Abilene got their offense going as Kortney McDow who was held without a catch for the first 17 minutes caught 4 passes in a row from Spens Lackey for 50 yards to put the Eagles in scoring position. Abilene would get on the board as Lackey hooked up with Ben Wadsworth for a 24 yard touchdown pass to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. Hebron would move the ball into Abilene territory right before the half but the Hawks ran out of time and at the end of the first half AHS led 7-0.
Hebron came out of the locker room on a mission as the Hawks went on an impressive drive moving the ball into the red zone, however the drive stalled and the Hawks had to settle for a 23 yard Mark Essary field goal to cut the Abilene lead to 7-3. After forcing an Abilene punt, Hebron benefited from two 15 yard penalties on Abilene to move the ball down the field and this time punch it in as Darius Staten scores on a two yard run to make it 10-7 Hebron with 2:04 left in the third quarter. After the Hebron touchdown Abilene would embark on a 79 yard drive to take the lead back behind the running of Keithy Flye who scored on a 5 yard run to make it 14-10 Abilene. The Eagles defense led by Chris Williams and company forced Hebron to punt and AHS would ice the game with time consuming march capped by a 5 yard touchdown run by Lackey to give the Eagles a 20-10 lead and that would be the final margin for Abilene 20-10 as they would notch an interception late to ice the game. Next week Abilene takes on Pflugerville in the Class 5A Division II State Semi-Finals at Texas Stadium on Saturday at a time to be determined.
