Williams has plenty of early interest

When it comes to seeing who will be a few of the top players for the Class of 2009, Strake Jesuit TE/DE Wes Williams is one to keep an eye on. After doubling on both sides of the ball this past fall, Williams has started seeing some interest from Division I recruiters. TPI got the update on Williams' recruitment.

Recruiting for the Class of 2009 has began in full force, but only a handful of athletes have received scholarship offers. But the interest has been piling on for a lot of them and Strake Jesuit tight end/defensive end Wes Williams has the mailbox to prove that to be true.

The 6-3, 215-pound athlete has already began seeing major Division I interest.

"I have been getting interest from Georgia Tech, Kansas, California-Berkeley, Texas Tech, TCU, Missouri, and SMU," Williams said. "SMU, Missouri, and TCU send me hand-written letters and have requested for game film."

Though he is projected to play tight end on the college level, Williams doubles on both sides of the ball, but mainly on defense. He is open to all interest and did not have a favorite out of the bunch.

"Honestly, I do not have a leader right now," Williams said. "I want to go somewhere where I can get a good education and play some big-time football."

As a junior, Williams recorded 35 tackles (10 for loss) and had three sacks. Strake Jesuit coach Ron Counter plans to continue using him on both sides of the ball and feels he can excel at both.

"Wes (Williams) is only one of a few players who will play both offense and defense for our varsity," Counter said. "He plays aggressive defense and has great hands at the tight end position."

Williams is in the midst of basketball season right now, but plans to hit the football recruiting trail hard this upcoming spring. And as for the summer, he already has a few camps and combines lined up.

"I am definitely planning on going to Georgia Tech and Kansas this summer," Williams said. "I will also go to a few in Texas as well."
