China Spring: The Cougars are making their return to SQT play this season, long known for a prolific passing offense in the fall CSHS will be a threat in the summer. China Spring hasn't qualified for the State Tournament since 2001. The top player for China Spring is DB Mike Hicks who will likely be a factor on the offensive side of the ball as well, being the host of the SQT and having a ton of talent will make China Spring a favorite to advance out of what appears to be an evenly matched pool.
Marlin: The Bulldogs have had a pattern of making the State Tournament every other year since 2003 as MHS qualified in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Marlin however had a disappointing end to their 7 on 7 season at the State Tournament last year going 0-4. The Bulldogs will as always bring plenty of speed and athleticism to the table and they are 7 on 7 savvy. Keep an eye on QB Charles Hitchens, if he matures and makes plays the Bulldogs will be a tough out.
Hico: The Tigers have long been a team to watch out for in league play as they've long given Stephenville fits. However HHS hasn't advanced to the State Tournament since 2003. Hico will depend on junior QB Westin Williams who was first team all-district as a sophomore, his top target is WR Cory Needham. Those two will also anchor the Hico defense.
Gatesville: Gatesville has yet to earn a berth in the State Tournament but the Hornets have gotten close several times. GHS doesn't have much big name talent but they will be a solid team with a few good athletes, a dangerous team that can't be overlooked.
Little Matt's Pool Pick: China Spring
Big Matt's Pool Pick: Marlin
Rockdale: The Tigers come into the SQT with more big name talent than anyone else. RHS made their second trip to the State Tournament in 2007 advancing to the round of sixteen. Rockdale will likely rotate QB's as Joseph Sanders and Mark Drake should both see significant time at the QB spot. Sanders will also see time on defense for the Tigers. On defense keep an eye on Rockdale's LB's in Nic Hammett and David Skylar. Overall, Rockdale will be in major contention to take this pool.
Burnet:With the drop to Class 3A in realignment, Burnet will move from struggling just to make the State Tournament (BHS did not qualify in 2007) to being a possible contender to make some major noise. Burnet won't wow you with athletes, but they are a smart team in 7 on 7 and will be tough to stop. Keep an eye on LB Bubba Richards. Burnet's experience in the seven on seven format will be key as they'll compete with Rockdale to win the pool.
Bandera: After back to back trips to the State Tournament in 2005 and 2006 when the small schools were not in a separate bracket, Bandera failed to qualify for the big show in 2007. The Bulldogs are a favorite to make noise this year as they are led by their pair of Cole's in QB Cole Hubble and WR Cole Hicks. TE Zach Young is also another reliable target in the passing game.
Waco Reicher: Reicher has what you need in 7 on 7 play and that's a good QB in Kenneth Cluely. Cluely will also be a factor for the Cougars on the defensive side of the ball as he's by far the top athlete for Reicher. Ross Rasner is another top player on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker. Reicher early on will be a factor but a lack of depth will likely take its toll as the second and third game comes around.
