Wimberley: The Texans are seeking their first ever trip to the State Tournament and the Texans are dangerous. They have good depth and decent athletes across the board. QB Barron Scudder leads the Texans offense but can they advance out of a balanced pool?
McGregor: The Bulldogs always have some good athletes who are capable of making plays. WR's Kyle Reineke and Larry Smith are excellent targets while LB Hector Rodriguez was all-Central Texas in 2007. They are a sleeper pick to win this pool.
Fairfield: The Eagles are seeking their first ever trip to the State Tournament and much like McGregor they'll feature some good athletes. WR/DB Willie Tatum is the top player for FHS on both sides of the ball. However Fairfield's inexperience at this level of 7 on 7 play will cost them.
Rockdale: Rockdale did not have the kind of day they hoped for two weeks ago, as the Tigers went 1-2 in pool play. Rockdale's losses were in close fashion so that should be a confidence booster. QB Mark Drake leads the way on offense, while the super athletic Joseph Sanders is a threat on both sides of the ball for Rockdale. RHS is the favorite to win the pool based on their experience.
Little Matt's Pool Pick: Rockdale
Big Matt's Pool Pick: Wimberley
Brownwood: The Lions are the odds on favorite to not only win this tournament but also possibly win the entire thing in July. BHS has had major success in 7 on 7 in the Division 1 bracket and with the drop to 3A they could very well make major noise. QB Casey Pachall who has committed to TCU leads the way, while WR/DB Kenny Vaccaro who has committed to Texas is a major factor.
Waco Reicher: Reicher advanced to the State Tournament at China Spring two weeks ago, despite only posting a 2-2 record. QB Kenneth Cluley is the do it all man for the Cougars and he's fun to watch. Reicher since they have qualified will likely let some young guys get some work in as they try and develop some depth.
Burnet: The Bulldogs finished 1-2 in pool play at China Spring including posting a win over eventual qualifier Waco Reicher, however BHS due to an 8 point loss to Rockdale and a six point loss to Bandera BHS failed to advance. Burnet wasn't done any favors this week being placed in a pool with powerhouse Brownwood so in all likliehood BHS will have to take another shot at qualifying possibly at Bandera.
Prosper: Making the long trip south from the DFW area are the Prosper Eagles seeking their first ever trip to the State Tournament. With the extreme growth in Prosper the Eagles talent keeps getting better and they could surprise some folks at a later SQT.
Little Matt's Pool Pick: Brownwood
Big Matt's Pool Pick: Brownwood
Gatesville: The Hornets had a solid showing two weeks ago at China Spring going 2-1 and playing China Spring tough for a while. GHS has a good group that executes well but they lack big play ability. I think with their weak pool they'll likely qualify but I can't see them making a lot of noise at the statewide level.
China Spring: The Cougars were very impressive rolling to a 4-0 mark and winning their own SQT two weeks ago with relative ease. WR/DB Mike Hicks may not play but look for sophomore to be QB Brian Bell to continue to get plenty of work as CSHS gets geared up for the State Tournament.
Florence: Jeff Howe has to be loving this, Florence his alma mater has a very favorable draw and could possibly advance to the State Tournament. However, I don't think Florence can get past Gatesville although I do see them getting a win in this pool.
McLennan County Juvenile Detention Center: Ok, I am not going to lie. How can anyone know anything about this team? I am guessing they won't be too tough since Gatesville put them in their pool.
Little Matt's Pool Pick: Gatesville
Big Matt's Pool Pick: Gatesville
Jarrell: Jarrell is back playing in SQTs after playing in their first SQT last year. The Cougars don't have a ton of athletes but their experience in 7 on 7 play could enable them to have a solid showing this week.
Moody: The Bearcats are making their SQT debut this week, they do have some solid young talent with sophomore RB Walter Hammond and TE Mike Haigood. MHS will likely not fare well as they simply don't have much depth to make an impact.
Marlin: Marlin struggled in the China Spring SQT only going 1-2, the Bulldogs do have talent but how they play hinges on QB Charles Hitchens. He didn't play well at China Spring and this Marlin didn't play well. Keep an eye on freshman to be RB Justin Stewart, this kid is 6'0 185 and he's only going to be a freshman! Watch out for this kid, the pool isn't too tough and I think Marlin is the favorite to take the pool.
Riesel: The Indians are another team making their SQT debut this week. RHS could be a sleeper but I don't think they'll have enough to knock off Marlin.
Little Matt's Pool Pick: Marlin
Big Matt's Pool Pick: Marlin
Little Matt's Picks: Brownwood over Rockdale and Gatesville over Marlin
Big Matt's Picks: Brownwood over Wimberley and Gatesville over Marlin
Little Matt's Pick: Brownwood over Gatesville
Big Matt's Pick: Brownwood over Gatesville
