TPI Spring Report: Arlington Seguin

Well, it's May and that can mean only one thing...SPRING FOOTBALL! TexasPrepInsider has you covered with our annual spring tour of the DFW area and Friday we tookm our final stop on the spring tour as we visited the Arlington Seguin Cougars!

ARLINGTON- With excitement in the air and a very festive atmosphere the Arlington Seguin Cougars ushered in a new era under new HC Carlos Lynn who earlier in the year took the reins of the Cougars after a successful stint as DC at Cedar Hill. Seguin not only has a new coaching staff but the Cougars also debuted a sharp new logo, as Coach Lynn put it, "It is a new beginning for us at Seguin."

Overall, the Black-White scrimmage didn't go quite the way Coach Lynn expected as the Black Team put together a stunningly dominant defensive performance in a 35-0 rout of the White Team. There weren't many highlights for the White Team as the offensive line struggled all day and WR Darian Hogg simply could not get on track.

The Black Team started quickly as on their first possession backup QB D.J. Griffin took the offensive reins and led his team right down the field a behind some tough running, the drive was capped by a seven yard touchdown run by D.J. Witherspoon. The second quarter featured an explosion for the Black Team as the defense got into the act first as DB Joseph Francis would scoop up a La'Ryon Witherspoon fumble and scamper 28 yards for the score and it was quickly 14-0. Later in the quarter Witherspoon would get his second touchdown run this time from six yards out and it was 21-0 and the rout was on. Griffin would score after a three and out for the White Team on a four yard run right before the half and it was 28-0 Black Team.

The second half saw more backups get playing time but Black Team LB Michael Martin made the play of the game picking off an errant Todd Hensley screen pass with one hand and taking it the other way for the game's final score of 35-0.

Overall, Coach Lynn and his staff have to be happy with the performance of their first team defense as that group has potential to be very good. Offensively there are lots of questions especially on the offensive line and at RB.
