Lake Travis: Despite being relegated to 7 on 7 center on May 31 due to his shoulder injury Garrett Gilbert managed to make an impact for LTHS as the Cavaliers romped to the Round Rock SQT title. Gilbert displayed big time leadership skills and was a coach on the field for his young teammates. Once he's healthy Lake Travis will be a major force in 7 on 7 and could compete for the state title.
Buda Hays Consolidated: The Rebels have never advanced to the State Tournament, but they are becoming much more active in the summer as they will host a SQT this year. Hays is led by RB Nick DeSantiago but they lack explosion at the skill positions and will likely struggle.
Belton: The Tigers didn't have much luck last week as they posted a goose egg in pool play going 0-3 at Waco Midway. Don't expect much from BHS this week as they are in a tough pool.
Round Rock Stony Point: An odds on favorite to win the pool, Stony Point may be the most talented team in the SQT. QB Nyk McKissic leads the way and he's got several weapons to use on offense with Glasco Martin and Desmond Martin. Julian Dozier is also a threat on both sides of the ball.
Little Matt's Pool Pick: Round Rock Stony Point
Georgetown: Georgetown got it going last week and qualified for state despite the less than stellar championship performance in the loss to Stephenville. GHS should be back at full strength this week as Georgetown was eliminated from the baseball playoffs last week.
Copperas Cove: The Bulldawgs narrowly missed out on advancing to the semi-finals last week falling to Georgetown 32-27 before rattling off two impressive wins. Cove is poised to get back to the State Tournament and they are the favorites to win the pool.
Brady: Brady still has not embraced the idea of playing small school SQTs but BHS will be playing in 3 5A-4A SQTs. Brady has some decent athletes but simply lacks depth to compete at this level. Look for Brady to start playing small school SQTs if they move a SQT closer to their locale.
Austin Westlake: The Chapparals were disappointing in their SQT debut posting an 0-3 record at Waco Midway. Although all three losses were by less than seven points. I expect Westlake to play much better this week and maybe even get a win or two this week but I don't think they make it out of pool play.
Little Matt's Pool Pick: Copperas Cove
Round Rock Westwood: Westwood surprised many by advancing all the way to the championship of the Round Rock SQT two weeks ago. Westwood did get routed in the semi-finals by Lake Travis but WHS wasn't at full strength playing many backups. The Warriors will likely play some young guys as they try and develop some depth for the State Tournament.
Lampasas: The Badgers posted a 2-1 mark last week at Waco Midway which was a bit of a surprise although their pool was not loaded with strong teams. LHS will find the going much tougher this week and I don't anticipate them to win a game this weekend.
Brownwood: The nearly unanimous pick to qualify at the Gatesville Division II SQT last week was stunned by Rockdale in the semi-finals. Brownwood seems like they'd like to make it into the Division II State Tournament as next week they'll play at Arlington Bowie, but nonetheless the Lions are dangerous and could easily win the pool and qualify.
Austin Bowie: Bowie is my pick to win the pool, they posted a solid 2-1 mark at Round Rock two weeks ago and played Lake Travis to a six point loss 41-35. BHS has some excellent talent and I anticpate them to win this pool in impressive fashion.
Little Matt's Pool Pick: Austin Bowie
Pflugerville Connally: The Cougars are seeking their first ever trip to the 7 on 7 State Tournament. Connally has some of the top athletes in the Austin area and they should be a dangerous foe not to be taken lightly.
Cedar Park Vista Ridge: The Rangers were placed in a very tough pool last week with DFW powers Stephenville and Arlington Lamar at the Waco Midway SQT and posted a 1-2 record. VRHS did play both teams tough so they can step away with some good vibes still. Vista Ridge is a favorite to take the pool as they have already dominated Round Rock in an earlier game at the Round Rock SQT.
Round Rock: After a slow start two weeks ago at their own SQT, the Dragons posted a 2-1 mark in pool play including a big win over Georgetown. RRHS if they can keep the momentum going could be a player to not only win the pool but make a push for their first State Tournament trip since 2004.
Dripping Springs: DSHS made their only appearance at the State Tournament in 2005 and the Tigers likley won't make the trip this year as they are in one of the tougher pools in the SQT. Getting one win might be all once can ask from Dripping Springs.
Little Matt's Pool Pick: Cedar Park Vista Ridge
Little Matt's Picks: RR Stony Point over Copperas Cove and Austin Bowie over Cedar Park Vista Ridge
