Tyler John Tyler- JT went to Temple last weekend and struggled against some strong competition. The Lions have fared very well in local league play but in SQTs they can't out-athlete the competition. JT was 1-3 last week, if they can get better play at QB they have the talent to win the pool. DB Corey Wilson is the top defender and WR's De'trich Morgan and Dominic Ward are the top weapons on offense.
Katy Morton Ranch- Morton Ranch is making the long drive up to try and make their first appearance in the 7 on 7 State Tournament. MRHS is led by QB Joseph Mitchell and WR Nashon Davis. The Mavericks have good talent and should be a tough out.
Arlington Lamar- The Vikings have yet to lose a game in SQT play this summer, and their number one group went 6-0 this past weekend at a non-qualifier at SMU. Lamar won't have all their big guns with them this week as they are sending a younger group out to Tyler.
Rockwall- The Yellow Jackets have come close to qualifying two weeks in a row advancing to the semi-finals at SMU and Coppell, but Rockwall has fallen to 7 on 7 powers in both semi-final games (Wylie and Arlington Bowie). Look for the Yellow Jackets to be the favorite in a tough pool.
Little Matt's Pick: Rockwall
Big Matt's Pick: Rockwall
Tyler Lee- The Red Raiders had to wait until the last weekend of SQT play last year to qualify, but they took care of business last weekend in winning the A&M Consolidated SQT. Lee has a solid QB this year in Luke Wagner and he's got several big time weapons in RB Dada Brown, WR Chris Dinkins and DB's Josh and Jordan Aubrey.
New Waverly- The Bulldogs who qualified for the 7 on 7 State Tournament in the Division II bracket last year are likely wanting to get some work in against bigger schools as they prepare for an attempt to qualify for the Division II State Tournament at Navasota next week. NWHS has some major skill talent with WR Sir Horace Saulsberry, WR Kyren Watts and RB Tyren Watts.
Forney- Forney qualified for the State Tournament last year at this SQT, but FHS doesn't quite have the skill talent they possessed last year. RB Peter Smith is still in the fold and he's as dangerous as ever but I don't think this year Forney has enough to make a push to qualify, although with the weak pool I think the Jackrabbits can advance to the semi-finals.
Whitehouse JV- Whitehouse is sending a second squad to try and help fill the tournament.
Little Matt's Pick: Forney
Big Matt's Pick: Forney
Marshall- The Mavericks have some major skill talent and this could be their best chance to advancing to the State Tournament. Led by highly recruited QB Darius Jones and WR Damion Smith, Marshall has the go to guys to make it work. I don't think they'll advance out of a solid pool but I do look for the Mavericks to perform well.
Jacksonville- Jacksonville has struggled the past two seasons, but look for improvement this year. The Indians traditionally are very athletic and they have been known to produce good receivers. QB Ryan Black leads the offense with his top target being Terrance Canady, and the secondary is in good hands with DB Jimmy Gray and Jeremy Chappelle.
Sulphur Springs- The Wildcats have played very well this summer led by their big time QB Tyrik Rollison. SSHS hasn't qualified for the State Tournament since 2004, but with RB Ryan Young and DB Johnny McSheffrey the ‘Cats have a great chance of getting to Texas A&M.
Tyler Lee JV- Tyler Lee is sending their JV to the SQT to assist to fill the tournament.
Little Matt's Pick: Sulphur Springs
Big Matt's Pick: Sulphur Springs
Lindale- The Eagles are traditionally a strong 7 on 7 team and should fare well in the SQT. Lindale is led by QB Nathan Simmons and a strong group of skill players anchored by WR Logan Lawrence, RB Traevon Ray and DB Vinson Brown.
Longview Pine Tree- The Pirates showed major improvement last fall and a strong summer could mean even better things in 2008. WR Terrance Sparkman is a matchup nightmare for defenses at 6'6. PTHS lacks depth at the skill spots and in a pool with Lindale and Whitehouse, the Pirates will not be able to advance past this round.
Whitehouse- Led blue chip QB Brady Attaway, Whitehouse has made huge strides. The Wildcats have a good group of receivers and paired with Attaway they are a threat to qualify for the State Tournament. WR Asher Williams is the top target and what separates WHS this year is a very strong secondary with sensational sophomore Quincy Aldridge and Jermaine Kennedy.
John Tyler JV- John Tyler is sending their JV to the SQT to assist to fill the tournament.
