7 on 7 State Tournament Day 1 Recap

TexasPrepInsider has all the 7 on 7 coverage you need and we take a look at Thursday's action from Texas A&M!!

COLLEGE STATION- In a day that featured the favorites dominating pool play, upsets reined supreme in the initial round of bracket play the Fox Sports Net 7 on 7 State Tournament Thursday at Texas A&M University.

In pool play several teams stood out as Diboll took center stage in Pool C going 3-0 and really not being challenged. Navasota in Pool D was another team who was dominant posting a 3-0 mark only being challenged by Glen Rose in a 33-26 win, Carthage who qualified for the big school tournament last year rolled through Pool E with a 3-0 record but the Bulldogs were pushed in each game. Crane was once again the darlings of the day winning a brutal Pool H that featured defending champion Celina and Rockdale. Pre-Tournament #1 Brownwood posted a 2-1 mark in Pool G and winning the pool based on a tie breaker.

Players who really stood out during pool play included:

Connor Wood, QB Houston 2nd Baptist

Jacolby Spencer, QB Diboll

Derek Thompson, QB Glen Rose

Brandal Jackson, WR Navasota

Si'Darius Blackshire, QB Carthage

Parker Taylor, WR Brownwood

Cole Hicks, WR Bandera

Bracket play is where things got very interesting as several pool winners were stunned in bracket play. The biggest shocker was Carthage falling in overtime to Paradise who went 0-3 in Pool A. 2nd Baptist out of Houston also fell victim to the upset bug losing to New Waverly who finished fourth in Pool G. Hitchcock who won Pool A was stunned by Rice Consolidated who failed to win a game in pool play. The usual suspects are still alive as Celina, Diboll, Navasota and Crane are still ticking, but keep an eye on two sleepers in Jasper and Melissa. Here is a complete wrap up of the days action.

Round of 16 Matchups

Games start at 8:30am at Penberthy

Rice Consolidated vs. Lovejoy

Jasper vs. Navasota

Diboll vs. Celina

Melissa vs. New Waverly

Marion vs. Normangee

Rockdale vs. Brownwood

Crane vs. Bandera

Gatesville vs. Paradise

Looking ahead tomorrow the marquee matchup will be Diboll vs. Celina, the two teams hooked up twice in last year's State Tournament with Diboll winning the pool game but Celina knocked the Lumberjacks off in the semi-finals. Another super matchup is Brownwood vs. Rockdale which is a rematch of the teams semi-final game at the Gatesville SQT when Rockdale stunned the heavily favored Lions. Crane vs. Bandera is a very underrated game, but should be a fun one to watch as both teams are experienced and can throw points up in a hurry. Jasper after their initial loss has been red hot, but they are taking on a juggernaut in Navasota, the other sleeper Melissa takes on New Waverly.
