It almost seems like a right of passage for Winona as due to their location in the heart of East Texas, the Wildcats are destined to be in a tough district. East Texas is where most of the power in 2A football lies and Winona can attest. In the revamped 18-2A Winona doesn't have to deal with Jefferson but they picked up Elysian Fields and Class 3A drop down White Oak.

On the offensive side of the ball, Winona will run, run and run some more in their Slot T offense. The ground game will depend on sophomore Josh Timmons and senior Taylor Murpphy. Clay Walker will be the blocking back. When Winona needs to throw it WR Ricky Medina is a solid option after earning second team all 18-2A honors as a junior. OT Cody Brumfield at 6'1 275 anchors the offensive line which returns three starters.

On defense Winona returns 7 starters, the top player on defense is LB Clay Walker who as a sophomore earned second team all 18-2A honors. DB C.J. Petty was also a second team all-district performer as a junior.

Overall, Winona should be a better team in 2008 but 18-2A will be a meat grinder. State runner-up Elysian Fields replaces Jefferson and Class 3A drop down White Oak adds to the depth. Harleston, New Diana and Harmony are all going to fight it out to move into the top 3.
