El Paso Coronado had a stellar 2007 advancing to the area playoffs for the first time since 1994 before being ousted by Abilene. The Thunderbirds have some work to do as a strong senior class graduated, but there is still some talent left.

On offense District 1-5A Offensive Newcomer of the Year Willie Williams is back. Williams who averaged over 9 yards a carry and is a dangerous return threat will be counted on to carry much of the load. He is a smallish back and there are questions if he can take the punishment. Look for sophomore Sam Brown to split carries with Williams also. QB Mando Duran will take the reins of the offense this year and along with the offensive line those are the main quesions for the Thunderbirds offense.

The defense for Coronado should be strong with seven starters returning led by LB Jo-Jo Herbert who was first team all-district with 101 tackles in 2007. DE Oscar Merz is the anchor up front as he was second team all-district posting 35 tackles and 2 sacks. The secondary's top player is Alex Bobadilla who led the team with 4 INTs.

Overall, Coronado will be right in the playoff mix in 1-5A once again. Montwood and Franklin will once again be fighting at the top of the heap. Socorro, Coronado and Hanks will be in a war fighting for the final two spots.
