2008 Team Insider: El Paso Franklin Cougars

Some websites consider their team insiders to be top 20 countdowns - and they even charge you for it. We cover all the teams - not just the top 20 in each class. Check out our 2008 Team Insider series today! We give you the best and most complete team insider information from around the state - and we do our own in-house recruiting - we are not on the network feed.

In 2005 Franklin made an improbable run to the State Quarter-Finals before being eliminated by eventual State Champion Euless Trinity. The Cougars haven't reached those heights the past two seasons but 2007 was another playoff season. FHS was knocked out in a thriller by Lubbock Coronado 23-21.

On offense there's lots of work to do as Franklin lost 8 starters. There is a battle at QB where it looks like Coach Walker will go with the senior Parker Rando who saw spot duty last year, Josh Valenzuela will also be in the mix at QB but look for him to play RB where he saw two starts. WR Brandon Behl is the top playmaker in the passing game returning as he notched second team all-district honors. The offensive line is an area of concern.

On defense the Cougars will count on their front seven to carry the day. Eric Chavez is the top returner, the first team all 1-5A performer is at times unblockable and he must be accounted for at all times. The LB's are solid led by Kenny Zachary and Collin Garman. The secondary is a concern as the Cougars will count on Cisco Rey to hold things down while some inexperienced players get worked in.

Franklin has established itself as one of the premier programs in Greater El Paso over the past few years but they don't have the depth or talent to make an impact at a statewide level right now. I expect the Cougars to be a playoff team but getting past the first round will be a tall order with the strengthening of 2-5A.
