It is time to pull back the curtain a little bit in this team preview. We have had debates with the DFW Staff (Andy and Little Matt) about the placement of Midway. I don't think they should be in the playoff race. Little Matt and Andy (both more experts on the area than I am) strongly agree that Midway is a strong fourth place team in the district. After seeing their team insider, I somewhat understand why they are so high on the team. At least in skill players and frontline guys - this team is as loaded as I've seen - but their issues will be depth and youth. If they can overcome these things, fourth might be a little too low.
Offensively, 6 starters return for the 1 back offense. The team will try to feed the ball to John Hubert as much as possible. His 150 yards a game and 2 touchdowns a game were a very consistent force for Midway last season. Todd Glaesmann has been playing since his sophomore year and if he is healthy - he is one of the better quarterbacks in the district. Trey Graham is a stud tight-end who they can use blocking and pass-catching. The wide receivers will be a little weak - but they excelled pretty well in 7 on 7 before losing to Mercedes in their own SQT. Ty Horn is a pretty solid force on the offensive line. Clay Rusek is a very speedy offensive lineman who has more of a linebacker mentality.
The defense will be young this year - and a lot of the good players are underclassmen. Star linebacker Mark Martinez started as a freshman and as a sophomore he is already ahead of the game in experience. Ahmad Dixon had 105 tackles as a sophomore. Charles Kelley was defensive newcomer of the year at linebacker. Beau Blackshear is a new defensive end that has been tearing it up on the freshman team. The defensive line will be average led by Blackshear and Terrence Holloman. Brandon Knapp and Austin McDaniel round out the secondary. The special teams game will be pretty good as they will have the best punter in the district in Corey Holmes.
Overall, Midway on paper is probably the second best team in the district. Will they be able to consistently week after week knock off Midlothian, Corsicana, Ennis, Waco, Waxahachie, et al? For me, I don't think so. This team will be fun to watch and if they make the playoffs (even as a fourth place team) will be a possible favorite over whomever they would play in 15-4A. I look for something to happen with Midway this year to keep them from reaching their potential. What that intangible is? I can't say - they have been injury prone and I would never wish injuries on a team. Perhaps it is a case of the players will be so enamored in watching Hubert play that they don't play themselves. I begrudingly agree with Little Matt and Andy that this is a fourth place team.
