Hopes are high in Abilene and the buzz isn't just surrounding Abilene High this year. Abilene Cooper dropping down from Class 5A has some big name talent back and they could be a a contender to make some noise out West.

On the offensive side of the ball Cooper is led by RB A'Mon Pimpton who earned first team all 3-5A honors as a junior topping 1100 yards and scoring 9 touchdowns. WR Tommy Bowman led the team in receiving with 404 yards and 3 touchdowns and he'll be the top target for whoever is the QB. The offensive line will be anchored by big junior David Damien. The major question for Coach Spradlin's crew is who will take the reins at QB, that will likely determine the Cougars fate.

The strength of the Cooper defense lies in the secondary where they boast as many as three Division 1 prospects. Overall, six starter return from a unit that really progressed as the 2007 season went along. Up front the Cougars are led by SMU recruit Brandon Henderson who flat out dominant as a junior earning first team all 2-5A honors. In the secondary Cooper is led by Texas Tech recruit Will Ford who has great range and is a natural leader. Demetric Lee and Stephun Hazlett are tremendous members of a strong supporting cast.

Overall, expect Cooper to benefit from the drop as Class 4A in West Texas is not very strong. Cooper could make a two or three round run come playoff time as they likely won't run into anyone who can stay with them until they play DFW teams. In District 4-4A play look for Cooper to only be challeneged by Frenship and possibly Hereford. However, Hereford has to take the long road trip to Shotwell this year.
