2008 Team Insiders: Strake Jesuit Crusaders

It seems as though every time there is realignment, Houston Strake Jesuit moves to a new district. But no worries, coach Ron Counter and the Crusaders welcome any and all new challengers. In a newly formed 18-5A, can the Crusaders have another winning season? Check out TexasPrepInsider as we highlight your favorite teams in Texas with our previews.

A few years ago, the Strake Jesuit athletic program was moved into UIL play. Since then, the Crusaders have fared quite well. After two years in the Katy ISD district, then two with Cy Fair ISD, they are now in District 18-5A with Spring Branch and Alief ISD schools.

Good news for the Strake Jesuit football team is that there are 10 (4 OFF, 6 DEF) returning from last year's 8-3 squad that fell to Katy in a tough bi-district playoff game.

Defensively should be the strength of the Crusaders and defensive linemen Joseph Williams and Wes Williams are the headliners. But both may see time on both sides of the ball as J. Williams is moving over to defense after starting two years at tackle. Coach Ron Counter said that Wes (35 tackles and three sacks last season) will likely excel at the tight end position, but will still see time on defense as well. Also on the line, look for newcomer Michael Sam and Brett Provenzano to make some noise.

At linebacker, Garrett Staudt returns for his senior campaign. In the defensive backfield, James Scott (SMU commit) returns after a stellar junior season at defensive back recording four interceptions. Scott will likely double at quarterback this season. Also in the secondary, look for returnees Beau Grenier, Patrick Blizzard, Brian Till, and Bayo Adesomo.

Offensively Scott will lead the way, but running backs Tim Ashe and Britt Sobiesk will be in the backfield as well. Ashe saw significant time as a junior last season. On the receiving end, Kellan Bellanger and Klein Kubiak return.

Returning for the Crusaders' special teams is kicker Alex Wilkins who was successful on eight field goals last season (which led the district). Bellanger returns as the leading return specialist averaging more than 22 yards a return on kick offs.
