Whitewright has a new coach but the similar expectations for success. Coach Trompler doesn't move too far from Wolfe City and he has a team that plays a tough schedule and generally makes the playoffs. The kids expect to win and he helps to propegate that attitude. The team returns 13 lettermen and 10 starters from the team.
Cody Sherman continues what has been a pretty solid set of quarterbacks for the team. Walter Smith is a tough nosed running back and may be the best in the district. He put up big numbers last year. The offensive line would be good at a 3A or 4A level - they have good size and speed. They play both ways frequently. Walter Smith is also a star as a linebacker. Stephen Crump will come in and spell Smith when he needs a break. Blake Bearden is a speedy wideout and defensive back as is his younger brother Christopher Bearden.
With Gunter being down - the district is wide open this season for a new sheriff in town. This year, that sheriff may be the Whitewright Tigers. Considering what they are returning, the only reason one would pick Gunter over Whitewright is history - but Whitewright on talent, if they can stay healthy, has the better team this season. They have a pretty good non district schedule but one they can definitely go undefeated with. I look for an 8-2 or a 9-1 season out of Whitewright, and they may be one of the better teams in the metroplex this season.
