Desoto has become an elite team the last couple of seasons. 2 years ago, it took state champion Cedar Hill to do it - after a triple overtime game earlier in the season against the team. Last year, it took quadruple overtime. This year, they have a new coach and a very young set of skill players. They return 8 starters. They like to run the ball but will air it out when necessary. The defense will be way ahead of the offense this season.
The new QB/RB combo will be extremely good in a couple of years - how they start the season may be anyone's guess. Ryan Polite got a lot of time as a freshmen in the system as did Antoin Jimmerson - more in clean-up duty when all-world Cyrus Gray was off the field. Both of them should comprise a very athletic backfield. Byron Hudson will also see time at running back with Marcus Murphy. Wide receiver Darius Terrell could be the best of the bunch. The offensive line will be led by Chris Atchison and Alonzo Newton.
The linebacking crew for the team will be very solid led by Marcus Simmons and Chris Maclard. The defensive line will feature big kids like Damian Lewis and Alonzo Newton. The secondary will feature speedsters such as Vincent Eddie and Rod Jones. The defense will lack a lot of experience as Desoto graduated a huge class of athletes last year. They will have to play as a team and accept coaching to come together as one unit and be effective this season.
Desoto might be a little overrated this year. I have them second in district behind Mesquite but I could see them dropping to third behind Tyler Lee - especially if they struggle early. They scrimmage Plano East so we will see if they can dominate an average team. If they can't - it might be a sign that Desoto will be good - just maybe not top 10 good - more along the top 20 good - which for most teams is a successful season. Desoto has a tough non-district schedule - so I look for a 7-3 type of season out of Desoto.
