2008 Team Insider: Frisco Raccoons

We are here in August - and while some sites have five writers working on two previews a day - and only cover the top 20 teams in the state - we cover every region in the state and every team in the metroplex. 2 a days have started - and no other site brings you more inside information than the ones who have been doing it for years - TexasPrepInsider.com!

Frisco gave Highland Park arguably its best two games last season. Frisco played Highland Park tough - and Coach Vance Gibson has not been given the credit for reloading that he probably deserves getting. The last couple of years, Frisco has seemingly been down and out of it and they jump right back in and have a very successful season. Yet again, I have fallen in the trap of underrating them - partially because of the entry of Denison and Sherman into the district. Only returning 8 lettermen and 4 starters, perhaps this is the first season I am right about the impending doom of Frisco.

A lot of people, especially in local leagues, have been really excited about QB Gavin Gray. He has developed the eye test pass and has been extremely effective. He could be a major part of Frisco's success this season. Josh Hill will take over at running back - and he has big shoes to fill. The offensive line will be good led by Scott Kolburn and KW Kearney. Coach Gibson has the very odd distinction of calling the game from the press box - so he is considered more of an offensive mind to this team.

The defensive side of the ball isn't returning much. Cord Avy has been a dominant defensive linemen. He has good technique and usually gets the focus of a double team when he starts to run wild. The linebackers will be good led by Josh Sears and Justin Mitchell. Likely the best player on the defense is Alphonse Coleman. A returning starter from last season, Coleman can disrupt plays and cut off half the field. Coleman is expected to see time at wide receiver as well.

I still think Frisco will make the playoffs - but this year they look like a fourth seed. I don't think they have the consistency to beat Denison or Sherman, and although the McKinney game is a toss-up right now, I think there's a clear distinction between the top four and the bottom four teams in this district. There is not that much of a gap to where I can say with pretty good certainty that none of the teams could bite Frisco - but I think Frisco is a pretty safe four seed - they have dominated their series against Frisco Centennial and should be the big dogs on the block against Liberty and Wakeland.
