FW Arlington Heights has fallen on hard times as of late A new coaching staff comes in to last season's 5-4 record. Only 15 lettermen return and 5 returning starters from last year's team return. The team has lost a lot of its talent base to other high schools in the ISD and are now seen as a second tier team - who will have to work to make the playoffs.
QB Mark Grace is a pretty solid quarterback, but he probably won't have the tools around him to do much. Adonnys Wright is the expected running back. He is a big bruising back capable of consistent yards. The offensive line should be pretty good led by Dominique Drennon and Antwan Rhodes. This is going to have to be a team this season who pounds the ball and plays clock control.
Junior Willie Byrd will lead the defensive line. He is more of a speed receiver and would be better suited at linebacker. The linebackers they do have are prototypical linebackers - the Harrison twins, Clay and Chris will patrol the middle of the field. The secondary is good but not great - and they will not have much depth. Leeland Gupton is the best defensive secondary talent on the team.
The way the zones shake up in FW ISD, Arlington Heights will have a hard time breaking the top two spots to get into the playoff picture. Dunbar and Wyatt will be tough teams for Arlington Heights to face. Heights will have a tough non-district against Birdville - but the games against Azle and Paschal are definitely winnable. Probably the more interesting game they will play is at Celina in week 3 of the season. Can Arlington Heights knock off a 3A state championship team? If they can - the residual confidence should trickle down to the rest of the season as the two big games in their zone play are the first two games in the schedule.
