2008 Team Insider: Mesquite Poteet Pirates

We are here in August - and while some sites have five writers working on two previews a day - and only cover the top 20 teams in the state - we cover every region in the state and every team in the metroplex. 2 a days have started - and no other site brings you more inside information than the ones who have been doing it for years - TexasPrepInsider.com!

The Poteet Pirates of Mesquite, TX had a breakout season a couple of years ago, but in a tough 10-4A, they immediately fell to the second tier last year. They do return 12 starters from last year's team but will have to replace a lot of the skill players. The offensive and defensive lines could be strong, so if they could find a diamond in the rough offensively, they could run their way into a playoff spot in a very middle of the pack heavy 15-4A.

The team will have to find a new quarterback, but Chris Bibins looks to be the heir apparent at the running back position. Two young kids, Josh Slater and Jacob Sutton could be in the running for quarterback/running back positions this year. Thomas Baca and Skye Dawson return at the wide receiver position. Both are a little small but have great speed and good hands. The offensive line will be above average with kids like Christian Dry and big James Hogue leading the way.

The defensive line will be above average. Karl Clayton is a big defensive linemen who is dominant at the point of attack. Chancellor Archie is big and fast as well. Derrick Hanson doesn't quite have the size but he is quick and moves around well. The linebackers will be good. Brock Bell was featured in a Morning News article about heat exhaustion. He is a good looking good who makes big plays. The secondary will be fast featuring Blake Lewis, Corey Graham and Kendrion Betts. They may have a hard time with the physical receivers that teams like Lancaster bring.

Games against Denton Ryan and Sulphur Springs will certainly test Poteet early. Frisco Centennial is a very winnable game and Frisco as of right now is a toss up. I think the last three spots in the district will come down to Lancaster, Forney and Poteet - so the Forney vs. Poteet game may be crucial to determine who gets in the playoffs and who doesn't. Forney is returning more and has some great all-state potential players so they have to be considered the slight favorite as of right now - but watch out for Poteet - if the skill players develop - they have a great shot of making the playoffs.
