After getting knocked around quite a bit last season, Azle looks to bounce back after an 0-10 season. 9 starters return for second year coach Eddie Paul. Things are not looking up in Hornet land this season either. Coach Paul worked hard in the offseason to get his team ready for this - and in his estimation they have improved - but have they improved enough to win a district game?
Ryan Haskell is the expected quarterback for the team. CJ Davila will put up good numbers at running back - with Phillip McDaniel lead blocking for him. Dee Gorrell and Jordan Beall will play receiver for Azle this season. The offensive line will be young but have good size. Skylar Broom and Graham John might be the bright side of the team.
Andrew Frickie is a returning defensive end from last season and one of the bright spots with Jon McGehee and Elton Skipper. There will be some weaknesses at linebacker with Alex Felix and Clint Padgett leading the way. The secondary will be overmatched most of the season to be blunt. Todd Dunn and Karson Kuhn are two names to watch - but the team has no depth in the secondary.
So can Azle win a game this season? Even normally winless Brewer picked on the Hornets last season. I think they will get one win but they will have significantly improved if they get a second win. The best chance will be against Brewer in district; however, Arlington Heights and Western Hills are both fringe games that if Azle plays lights out they can win - but both teams have more talent than Azle, and it looks to be another lean year for the Hornets.
