2008 Team Insider: Colleyville Heritage

We are here in August - and while some sites have five writers working on two previews a day - and only cover the top 20 teams in the state - we cover every region in the state and every team in the metroplex. 2 a days have started - and no other site brings you more inside information than the ones who have been doing it for years - TexasPrepInsider.com!

Colleyville Heritage showed the extent of their potential making a deep run into the state 7 on 7 - beating 7 on 7 powerhouse Plano before losing to eventual champion Richland. Last season, the team went 8-3 - they do return 14 starters, but a lot of those starters were simply in the rotation - as Coach Fuller has always had a philosophy of inclusion. Colleyville has some 2 and 3 year starters that should make this season a good one - but they will have a hard time competing at the top tier in their district.

Quarterback Steven Hill is an effective leader - and he passes the eyeball test. He has good size and speed and will fling it around pretty well. Bryan Head is best described in terms of a Rex Burkhead type of player. He is a gritty, strong and fast running back that can do it all. He is a three year starter. Replacing the receivers will be tough for Colleyville - but Jake Skinner and Stan Smith should help out. The offensive line is the weakness of the team - but Cameron Martin is pretty good at the center position.

The defense has some individual stars but will be thin in a lot of areas. Matt Hornbackle is a good defensive linemen as is Robert Heine - but they are very thin. Bobby Schneider is a great linebacker and has lots of varsity experience. He will be the voice of the front 7. Tyler Crouch is another top notch linebacker. Eddie Foster is one of the best defensive backs in the area - but outside of him, there's not much in the secondary and teams will just avoid his half of the field (if they are smart, anyhow)

In the preseason poll, I had Colleyville Heritage 4th, but Grapevine has brought out a big bag of nothing - so I am upwardly adjusting them to third in district. I think they will be a far cry away from Keller Fossil Ridge and Euless Trinity - although I think they will be competitive against Fossil Ridge. They will have some good competition to gauge where they are at in the non-district slate - but overall, I look for a third place finish out of the Panthers from Colleyville Heritage - and they will have a tough time getting past the first round of the playoffs.
