West Orange-Stark Mustangs

24 games and counting. It's a 3A district winning streak that started when the WO-S Mustangs made the drop from class 4A down to class 3A back in 2004. In those 24 games the Mustangs have only been challenged 4 times (2004 and 05 vs. Bridge City, 2006 and 07 vs. Silsbee). Last year the ‘Stangs went 3 rounds deep in the 3A playoffs following their district sweep in 21-3A before falling to Waco La Vega 20-12 to finish the season at 11-2. The 2008 Mustangs have 11 starters returning including a good nucleus of skill players that will have them geared up for another run at the district title. The Mustangs look even stronger this season than last year with the key starters returning, Once again the Stangs have a shot to go along way if not all the way. Coach Dan Hooks enters his 31st season as Head Coach of the Mustangs and what a better way to end 08 than win a State Championship.

Offense

WO-S has 6 returners on the offensive side of the ball for 2008. The Mustang offense pumped out big numbers again last year as they averaged 34 points per game. QB Ortavious Hypolite is back after having a great 2007 season. Last year Hypolite passed for 1,070 yards and rushed for 595 yards. Also back is TB Quintavious Garrett who will take over the starting role after rushing behind his brother DePauldrick. Quintavious rushed for 638 yards on 72 carries in 2007. With two of their main weapons back in the backfield the ‘Stangs should have another productive offense in 2008. Only questions for the Stangs once again is the Offensive Line, the Ponies have been hurting a little in that Department the last few years but look good even here this year. Eric Arnold (6-0,240,5.2) will return on the Line and is even bigger than last season. At the Wide Reciever position James Haynes who according to Coach Hooks is going to be one of the best for a youngster, Haynes is only a JR. Depth has always been an issue but if everyone stays healthy look out!

Defense

The Mustang defense welcomes back 5 starters from a 2007 unit that was very good as always as they allowed a mere 10 points per game. The WO-S linebacker group will be solid as they have Josh Lynch returning to lead the way. Joining Lynch at the LB position will be Robert Jiles. The Mustang secondary will also be very strong. Leading the way will be DB Josh Gloston along with James Haynes. The Chaingang Defense looks even stronger this season. "The kids have worked hard this Summer and are even stronger than last season, says DC Cornel Thompson". Lynch and Jiles are both D1 material and it should show this season. Special Teams looks better to this season as the Mustangs have found an extra point kicker in Sparrow.
